Pour from a 750 ml bottle at FOBAB 2013. Pours a deep, cloudy brown with a small khaki head. Definite Belgian character here, with sweet malts, cocoa, dark and dried fruits, coffee, oak, and spice. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a malty, fruity mouthfeel. I generally don’t tend to go crazy for Belgian imperial stouts, and this won’t change my mind. But it’s not bad.

Pours a solid black with a tan head and lacing. It has an aroma of dark fruit, spices, and some chocolate. The flavor is spices up front and and with a background of apples and dark fruit with a background of chocolate, dark malt, and coffee over a medium body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: Dark brown cola color with healthy beige head Aroma: Hefe-like a with a slight amount of oak and caramel Taste: Chocolate and toffee with a yeasty spicy citrus finish. The body is much lighter a stout. Overall: I was hoping for some more a barrel aged or sour taste but ultimately this is more a spiced belgian ale..

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2013 The beer had a black color with a slight dark brown hue and a wet appearance and consistency with a very large foamy and somewhat creamy tan head with great retention, and pretty good cling and lacing. Its aroma featured some citrus fruits and spice, but also a chocolate and soft coffee tone, along with caramel and oak. The taste was had some soft chocolate and caramel tones mixed with a light bitter citrus and spice blend and a light presence of oak. It was a wet, soft beer in the mouth but had good carbonation and fizz and a slightly noticeable presence of alcohol.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown / black with a tiny beige head. Nose is full of Belgian spice, some oak and slight cocoa notes. Flavour is similar, with Belgian spice and oak predominantly, with subdued cocoa notes. Almost a little metallic, but more oaky than anything. Very light-bodied for the style, but fitting due to the Belgian influence. A surprisingly strong beer from Samuel Adams.

9/17/2011. Bottle. purchased at the brewery. Pours black with a beige head. Roasted malt aromas with chocolate, licorice and Belgian yeast. Little sappy sweet from the oak, but in a nice way. Good balance.

tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - OCT 14, 2013
UPDATED: APR 9, 2014 Bottle: Deep brown & dark ruby in color with a tan head that fades pretty quickly and doesn’t leave any notable lacing behind. Aroma is very heavy with tons of fruity & earthy esters. Apples, grapes, sweet & malty even with a little bit of fruity tartness. Perhaps a touch of roast? But this really doesn’t smell much like a stout. Mild vinous back-end. Taste is the same way, fruity & even slightly tart mid-palate. Apple skins, red grapes, sweet raisins; mild vinous & oak character plays throughout. Finish contains some sweet toffee, mild caramel, and more oak. Hint of alcohol warmth with low bitterness. Definitely not much of a "stout" but for a Belgian ale, it’s decent.
