Bottle. The pour was a thick rich deep black with an average sized (1-2 finger) rocky light to medium brown head that was mostly diminishing with just a bit of residue left behind creating some fair lacing.
The aroma was of a burnt dark bread malt and a meaty leathery yeast with notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, molasses and had a mild smoky odor.
The taste was sweetly smooth and slightly malty with a hint of molasses and chocolate at first with the finish being a tad bitterer with a nice strong coffee note and a touch of smoke at the end. The flavor lingered for a good long time with a mild taste of smoke taking over by the time it faded.
Mouthfeel was medium to full in body with the texture being a bit oily and a tad creamy with a soft almost flat carbonation.
Overall a brew that starts out a little mild and weak, but finishes with a nice strong robust smoky coffee flavor.

Part of the winter pack. Decent coffee stout. If it weren't so hard to find I'd buy it more often.

Black with deep brown edges. Thin, short-lived, tan head.
Sweet, fresh ground coffee over well-roasted malts with a bit of dark chocolate.
Taste: Nicely balanced dark malt and coffee flavors. There’s a hint of spicy hops, particularly in the finish. Excellent sweet/bitter balance. Fine and long-lasting coffee/roasted grain/hops aftertaste.
M: Smooth and creamy; perhaps more lively (carbonation) than usual for a coffee stout, but works well for this beer.
O: Another very good coffee stout; these seem to have gone from rarities to nearly commonplace (e.g., Kona) in a short time.

"nice addition to the holiday pack! pours a deep dark brown, near black w/tan head. at first the aroma i was expecting wasn’t there, so the explosion of roasted malt and coffee on the palate came as a bit of a surprise. But the aroma opened up eventually too. Coffee dominated in a good way. A little thin, but about right for this style (it’s not an imperial after all). Well done." The appearance had a pure pitch dark black colored body with a creamy light brown head that disappeared fairly quickly, quick sliding lacing.
The smell had dark roasted malts, smokey coffee and just a hint of chocolate.
The taste had a roasty coffee flavoring that lingers for a while, chocolate comes out as it warms a bit.
The palate was about a medium, fairly sessionable, mild watery sweet aftertaste and finish.
Overall, I’m thinking Sam Adams did what they wanted to do with this one, chocolate and coffee, as for me, yeah, I’d have it again.

Clear dark brown with a thin laceful light tan head. Nose is a bit light but its caramelly with a wee note of nuttiness and very light coffee. Sweet flavor with earthy strong toffee and a wee bit of nuttiness, very light coffee tones. No heavy body, roast, or chocolate tones. A light bit of dark fruits throughout. Not shabby. Draft at Sharp Edge McMurray. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Nose smells like they burned the malt. There’s a hint of coffee there. November 2011. From bottle. Black with a beige head. Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and dark fruit. Bitter finish from the hops. Very good.
