Pours with a thick head that disappears a little too sudden, leaving no lace. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt, and a nice red wine. Flavor is a rush of roasted malt that is gently tapered by a nice infusion of light hops. Palate is silky smooth and allows the flavors to linger on the tongue. A very good brew. Bottle: Pours dark brown with a full fluffy tan head. Aroma is of nuts, malt, light wine scents. Maybe a hint of vinegar. Flavor is lightly roasty but mostly nutty with a touch of chocolate. Smooth, slightly sour finish with some bitterness. Good. mybrainhurts (397) - North Dakota, USA - MAY 19, 2005
Dark ruby pour with a short lasting head. Some lace along the glass. Dark malts give it a light roasty nose. Caramel, lightly roasted flavors. Short, quick finish. The overall experience feels a bit rushed, but it’s not bad. BrockLanders (780) - Panama City, Florida, USA - MAY 16, 2005
Dark brown in color; nearly opaque. Small, off white head. Nose is actually roasty...caramelish with a note of hop bitterness. Flavor is similar...roasted malts, some light choco-toffees. I’m mildly impressed. Light to medium bodied, decent balance toward the end...medium carbonation, bittersweet finish. Hmmm...not too shabby...beats the hell out of a triple bock. nick76 (4399) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 16, 2005
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2007 This is a wonderful beer. The aroma is toasty and chocolate. The is actually very dark and close to black. Nice head and nice lacing. Taste is also very good. It is reminiscent of chocolate and caramel just like it says on the bottle. Hops are subtle but perfectly balanced with the toasty malts. Sweet chocolate aftertaste. Yummy.

Looks and smells like a great beer. However, the taste is a profound letdown. Sickly sweet watery chocolate with a good dose of sour bread. demitriustown (1192) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - MAY 13, 2005
Pours dark brownish color with little tan colored head. Smells like chocolate, malty too, with a coffee smell. Flavor is really enjoyable. This is the first time I’ve tried this beer and would buy it again in a heart beat. Odeed (1803) - Bakersfield, California, USA - MAY 12, 2005
so this will be my first "black lager".the brew pours a deep, dark crimson red with a creamy/lumpy head.aromas of chocolate, malts, and earth.the flavor was much better than expected.coffee, malts, chocolate all form a medium/light body.this is very tastey.much like a smoked porter or light stout. Bottle. Pours deep mahagoney, almost black, with a small tan foamy head that dissipates to a thin rocky film. Roasted and caramel malt aroma with a dark coffee, chocolate finish. Faint hop notes rise into the air as well. Initially smooth sweet dark chocolate flavor. It finishes lightly hoppy and spicy. Medium body and fizzy, a bit butpy, and crisp finish. turbo (1271) - Arizona, USA - MAY 11, 2005
Bottle poured black with thick off white head and heavy lacing.
Very light aroma of malt and roast.
Flavor is is light roasted malts, chocolate.
Good easy drinking beer.
