Medium karbonering. Sirmixsomewhat (266) - Paoli, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 10, 2015
Great for cooking when poured over ribs, okay for drinking when poured into your mouth. Unknown for use in pouring into a toilet to clean the pipes, though probably not great for that. r464 (2407) - Earth, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 19, 2015
Dark, roasty malt with a bit of cocoa, char, and dark fruit. Fairly balanced overall.

Sam Adam’s Black Lager, is well, black. The color is self-explanatory, I think. Things get interesting with the aroma, where I get a heavy pepper scent, conjuring images of teriyaki jerky. But on second examination there’s an even nicer, subtler and more complex touch of peat, adding a low, deep earthiness, thickening the aroma. The flavor is much maltier and simpler - more like your standard winter warmer. The aroma is where the interesting dimensions are, so linger here with your nose. The flavor, while fine, doesn’t live up to the aroma’s nuance. BeerRenter76 (1064) - Texas, USA - SEP 11, 2015
Originally rated on 1/18/08. This is one of the better black lagers out there. It is a tiny bit spicey but sweet with hints of choclate and coffee.Has a nice finish to it. probably the best sam adams brew i have yet sampled. DerGantzel (518) - Aarhus, DENMARK - AUG 4, 2015
Notes of caramel, chocolate, and licorice. Perfect appearance and foam for the style.
Delicious taste, creamy and not over carbonated. Well balanced sweetness and bitterness. PlinyDad1952 (112) - - JUL 14, 2015
LAGERS ARE HEVY TO DRINK AND EVEN HEAVYER THEN PLINY )ITS THE BEST) AND SPECHIAL OCCASHION BEERSAM ADAMS MAKES A GOOD LAGER. ITS LIKE COPORATE FACTORYS IN CHINA NOT RELLY. SOME FLAVERS OF FRUIT AND SPICE LIKE LAGERS. REMBER TO HAVE A EMPTY STOMACHE FOR THIS BIG BEERS. TorbenJensen (1602) - Valby, DENMARK - JUL 13, 2015
This lager (although it is black and looks like a stout, it is therefore a lager!) Has a very nice, but brief, light brown foam. It smells very pleasant and sweet of hard roasted malt which does not allow much room for the subtle hop aroma. Furthermore, it smells a bit of English liquorice. It has a deep and protracted flavor of malt tones. Both the sweet caramel malt, but also the more savory malts which together provide a large richness in taste. Mouth feeling is creamy to bold and in the finale comes a gentle, yet sufficiently rich, hop bitterness. This beer lives completely up to its German roots and I really had also expected when it comes from one of the best microbreweries (in my opinion) in the US.
