4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
I agree with BuckeyeNation and have modified some of his comments and added my own in this review.
Dark walnut brown with red highlights. The golden beige crown is two fingers to start but did not last long. Fair lacing.
The aroma is more dark malty than anticipated and is huskily, muskily, earthily hoppy. Given what I know about schwarzbiers (not much), the nose is right on.
Black Lager is pretty tasty. It isn’t a wow! kind of beer, but it’s unquestionably well-brewed. There’s more flavor than expected and more roasted malt as well. This is the second time I’ve tried this beer. The first time being last autumn. I will say that either my palate has improved or this beer has. I like it so much more than then. A good amount of black/chocolate maltiness. The hops more than hold their own and are as important in the grand scheme of things as the malt.
The flavor profile consists of cocoa, dark caramel and, surprisingly, black coffee. Those flavors are complementary to each other (as well as to the herbal, earthy, slighty spicy hops) and are soft and powdery in character as opposed to charred. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium, which it maintains all the way to and through the finish.
This may be the best offering from Boston Beer Company. Black Lager is very good and was a nice surprise. Good stuff.

Medium karbonering. Sirmixsomewhat (266) - Paoli, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 10, 2015
Great for cooking when poured over ribs, okay for drinking when poured into your mouth. Unknown for use in pouring into a toilet to clean the pipes, though probably not great for that.

Dark, roasty malt with a bit of cocoa, char, and dark fruit. Fairly balanced overall. GarrettB (1599) - San Diego, California, USA - OCT 1, 2015
Sam Adam’s Black Lager, is well, black. The color is self-explanatory, I think. Things get interesting with the aroma, where I get a heavy pepper scent, conjuring images of teriyaki jerky. But on second examination there’s an even nicer, subtler and more complex touch of peat, adding a low, deep earthiness, thickening the aroma. The flavor is much maltier and simpler - more like your standard winter warmer. The aroma is where the interesting dimensions are, so linger here with your nose. The flavor, while fine, doesn’t live up to the aroma’s nuance. BeerRenter76 (1015) - Texas, USA - SEP 11, 2015
Originally rated on 1/18/08. This is one of the better black lagers out there. It is a tiny bit spicey but sweet with hints of choclate and coffee.Has a nice finish to it. probably the best sam adams brew i have yet sampled. DerGantzel (437) - Aarhus, DENMARK - AUG 4, 2015
Notes of caramel, chocolate, and licorice. Perfect appearance and foam for the style.
Delicious taste, creamy and not over carbonated. Well balanced sweetness and bitterness. PlinyDad1952 (112) - - JUL 14, 2015
