Bold, smoky character with a smooth malty finish.

The first thing one notices about a Samuel Adams® Bonfire Rauchbier is the deep smoky flavor which is balanced by a blend of malts that provide hints of caramel & toffee sweetness.

Roasted Malt is a horrible idea. I can hardly imagine a worse beer, unless it smelled like rotten garbage. Avoid at all costs.

Sam Adams really nailed this one. I love rauchbier, and this is both well brewed and interesting. The use of a blonde ale as a base is unexpected, but works incredibly well allowing the ample smoky flavors to shine through while delivering nuanced floral and wheat notes. Pours up clear golden with a bit of lacing courtesy of the one finger white head. Each swallow builds to a smoky crescendo which then fades quickly to a long mildly malty and slightly salty finish. Spicy continental hops start rise as the sky aspects fade. Excellent.

Pours an amber color with a thick off white head that left plenty of lacing around the glass. The aroma is smokey, sweet malts, caramel, woody, and some hops. The taste is more of the same. This beer is a great example of the style and I highly recommend it.

12oz bottle - Picked up in the Harvest Collection 12-pack from Sammy. A really underwhelming rauchbier. I was really hoping for something close to Aecht Schlenkerla, but this was far, far from that. This beer pours out a cream soda colored body, clear with a scant white head. Aroma has a light malty aroma, subtle dirty penny and a really light smoke aroma. Flavor has a little more smoke character, but it’s subtle with a slightly salty flavor, a little caramel malts but really kept under wraps. Too bad too. I was really hoping for an American beer that’s quite smokey and not a stout/porter.

"pours a nice clear amber orange. the aroma has to be worked for when poured cold, but it opens up eventually. but the first sip popped with nice sweet toffee malt and a sharp kick of smoke that lingered after. nice one from Sam Adams, best beer in the fall mixer."

(12oz bottle) Pours a clear copper body with a medium white head. Aroma of grain, smoke, caramel, and nuts. Flavor of smoke, grain, toffee, some dark fruit, caramel, and bread.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark amber hazy body, no head, no lacing. The smell had smokey meaty coming through in a dull bland way The was exactly the same as the smell and was really heavy. The palate sat about a medium, not exactly sessionable (at IMO), bland sticky aftertaste pounding all around my tongue, assault by carbonation, bland meaty finish. Overall, however I guess this still fits the style, but I’m not a fan of this whatsoever.

10/4/2011. 12 oz. bottle from a mixed seasonal case. Amber color with a tan head. Sweet aromas of caramel, malt and with a hint of smoke. Flavors hold the smoke and caramel throughout and the finish is light hops. I like this one.

Slightly hazed orangish amber with a medium taupe topper. campfire aroma of roasted malt, smoke and not much else. Taste of sweet malt, smoke and caramel with a zippy finish.

12 oz bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours a slightly hazy deep orange amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, moderate smoked character, lightly fruity, a hint of peat. The smoke is constantly there, but not overbearing.
