Really solid brew here. Nice smokey aroma to it. On the palate it almost tastes like you’re drinking a bonfire...but in a good way? Seriously, complex beer. Very nice malty characters. Got it in the fall seasonal pack. Worth a try for sure. brandon1989 (712) - Lewisville, Texas, USA - JAN 29, 2015
Pours an amber color with a thick off white head that left plenty of lacing around the glass. The aroma is smokey, sweet malts, caramel, woody, and some hops. The taste is more of the same. This beer is a great example of the style and I highly recommend it. wlajwl (7201) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - AUG 27, 2011
UPDATED: JAN 4, 2012 The aroma is mildly smokey but lingering while the appearance is similar to a red ale. The flavor has hints of smoked pork along with the requisite smoke, as well as a background of caramel sweetness. Normally the rauchbiers I’ve had are dominated by smoke to the point you can’t tell the style that is behind it, whether lager or ale, wheat or barley, but this was subtler than most, and a very good smoked beer. Pours a dark, cloudy brown color with a thin head that dissolves quickly. Smokey malts are the most noticeable scent. You don’t have to search for the tastes as the smoked malts hit the taste buds right away. Has a great body and texture to go along with its unique taste. For whatever reason it’s pretty hard to find a smoked beer as I’ve only ever had 2 out of trying over 200+ beers. This one is delicious and probably one of my favorite Sam Adams products.

Sam Adams really nailed this one. I love rauchbier, and this is both well brewed and interesting. The use of a blonde ale as a base is unexpected, but works incredibly well allowing the ample smoky flavors to shine through while delivering nuanced floral and wheat notes. Pours up clear golden with a bit of lacing courtesy of the one finger white head. Each swallow builds to a smoky crescendo which then fades quickly to a long mildly malty and slightly salty finish. Spicy continental hops start rise as the sky aspects fade. Excellent.

When i heard that Sammy was working on releasing a rauch, i got excited, even more so when it was actually staring at me in the mixed 12pk at my local grocery store- so i ripped open a couple of them and here i am .. . pours a deep orange sunset, decent foam .. . good dose of smoke, golden syrup and a kiss of bbq .. . quite smooth, the slightest touch of alcohol and a well made structure of sweetness with the smoke .. . well done, not to intrusive or scary for the normies- just plain good and my new favourite SA brew! .. . Mcnutt, Mcstalling.. poisoneddwarf (2688) - Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, USA - AUG 5, 2011
12 oz bottle. Pours a clear copper with a small light-beige head; leaves a resilient blanket of foam and little lace. Aroma is campfire smoke, creamed corn (disappears quickly), berries. Taste is nice and smoky; it’s sweet and a bit sour with little bitterness. Carbonation is medium and it has a creamy mouthfeel. Very good. More smoked beers, craft brewers of America, please. I love this style but hardly ever see it in my area. adam42381 (627) - Fort Myers, Florida, USA - AUG 11, 2011
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a New Belgium globe.
Appearance: Pours a dark woody brown with ruby-orange highlights and a 1-2 finger creamy light tan head. Excellent head retention with head pooling on top in the middle. Nice lacing.
Smell: Smoked bacon with maple. Wow, this makes me hungry for breakfast.
Taste: Smoke flavor up front followed by sweet malt and mild dried fruits in the middle before ending with a touch of hops. The smoke is definitely apparent throughout, especially up front, but it never overpowers.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation.
Drinkability: High drinkability. Like it’s name implies, this would be perfect around a campfire. That said, it’s pretty nice on a hot and rainy August afternoon here in Southwest Florida.
Overall: Excellent beer overall. While this is my first Rauchbier, I must say this beer is really good. I’d be pleasantly surprised if they get much better than this. I’d say it would be worth getting the Sam Adam’s Fall Mix Pack just for this one
