Samuel Adams Boston Lager is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoction mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the worlds oldest hops growing area. Among the worlds most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.

Pours dark golden to slight amber with small off-white head. Aroma and flavor are both a good balance of malt and hops. Nothing exceptional about it, but it is a good lager that is quite drinkable.

Bottle. Dark golden color with small head. More hoppy (flowers resinous) and bitter than your avg. lager. Slightly watery.

Bottled. Burnt gold in colour with a finger deep head that lasts. Not a lot on the nose, stuggling to find anything! There is a harsh chemical taint on the palate, with some malt coming up on the inside, but this is very disappointing, perhaps I should try this again before reveiwing it, but surely thats not the way to do it, I should tell it as I see it!! Bought from local Safeway/Morrison... but I wouldnt bother if I were you...might just be me of course!

Bottled. Pale brown/copper colour. Medium head. Honeyish, flowery hop aroma. Malty, sweet, flowery with notes of honey, ending in a hoppy finish. Body is a bit thin, though. Still, an excellent lager.

Dear Sam Adams, You claim to be Americas World Class beer. I have to disagree. Sam Adams, you are a very good beer. Dont get me wrong. Your color is a nice medium brown, your maltiness sufficient, and your hops copious and pleasant. But you are not Americas World Class beer. With the resurgence of Craft Brewing and the concurrent recurrence of Americans with some kind of taste in beer, you have been dropped down a peg and should proudly proclaim yourself: One of Americas better beers. Sincerely,

One of my original favorite American beers. Just because it sells a bit wider now doesnt mean it still isnt good stuff. Nice hoppy beer with a dry finish. Never disappoints.
