Pours bright mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan head with medium retention recedes hug rim. Smoky sweet caramel aromas. Sweet dark thick molasses upfront turning smoky in the lasting warm toffee finish. VTHopHead (1513) - Seymour, Tennessee, USA - MAR 10, 2012
Bottle/22oz - Pours a clear reddish brown in color with a very small light tan head and low carbonation. Aroma is quite smokey with almost a BBQ character to it... caramel malts add to the effect. Flavor is quite smokey with some dark fruit... malty and slightly sweet. Little presence of the ABV in this... well hidden. Unfortunately, the smokiness fades to an unpleasant medicinal flavor that hangs on through the finish. Without that, this would be a good beer... too bad... Pours translucent ruby with 2-finger splotchy off-white head. Nose is caramel malt, very smoky, with a definite vinous fruit nose, and hops. The taste is smoked malt, caramel, one of the sweeter rauchbiers I have had, with mid-palate hops and some red wine grapey hints. I’d love to see the recipe on this, as it really reminds me of a low level rauch-barleywine of sorts, and with the heavy malt bill of a bock, and with more hops. kirk36 (223) - Peabody, Massachusetts, USA - MAR 8, 2012
Beef jerky in a glass! 75 characters my ass! What can I say about a sweet tasting beef jerky beer? Too sweet, too commercial, too beefy, too smoky, commercial.

Beautiful clear brown pour with reddish highlights and ample light tan head. Smells pleasantly peaty, earthy, light smoke, some ham. Gets even better as it warms. Flavor is not quite as smokey, but more on the good side of classic bock style. Dark plum, malt heavy, earthy, raisin. good velvety mouthfeel. If this thing was more smoked, I would fall in love here, but its not as good as echt shlenkerla. But this is a top notch brew for sure.

650 ml. bottle. Batch one.Pours a thick, lasting ivory head, with some lacing, over a clear copper brown (SRM 17) body....nose is light smoke, toffee/caramel, hints of brown sugar....taste is light smoke, toffee/caramel, cereal, finishing, with a light hop bitterness, heavy sweetness throughout....mouth feel medium to heavy, slightly sticky, alcohol hidden, carbonation low. This is an interesting experiment, a cross between a Rauchbier and a Doppelbock. The smoke is very light for a Rauchbier with no hints or tones of bacon, but adds a nice balance to the very sweet malt complexity of the Doppelbock. Bottle. Dark caramel colored pour, almost no carbonation and a lightly smoky aroma. Flavor is nice caramel malt backbone, medium amount of balanced sweetness and just the right amount of smoke on the finish. Solid, I’d definitely pick this up again. Beerdrinker79 (2218) - Idaho, USA - MAR 5, 2012
22 oz. bottle- Pours dark ruby red with a two to three off white cream colored head that is reducing. The aroma is similar to a rauchbier, meaty, BBQ, malty, mildly spicy. The taste is caramel, toffee, meaty, alcohol burn, smoked barbeque, very smooth. Body and carbonation is medium. Interesting beer, better than the Dark Depths I think. The beer pours a deep red color with a tan head. The aroma is definitely that of a smoked beer. I get a ton of meaty BBQ-like smoke, as well as a little bit of roasted malt. The flavor follows suit. There are a lot of burnt malts, as well as as good dose of smoke and a little bit of sweetness from the toffee or caramel malt. Still, this beer is all about the smoke and it definitely delivers on that front. I don’t get any alcohol, which is surprising since the beer is nearly 10 percent. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. SphinxTX (2878) - Mata Gorda, Texas, USA - MAR 5, 2012
Bottle. Pours deep, dark amber with thick beige head. Aroma is filled with Smokey sweet toasty maltiness. Flavor is much the same with a great alcohol spice cutting through the sweet malt. Heavy mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Overall, very solid brew!
