COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

Dark brown cola like in color. large two finger frothy beige colored head. lots of amber hues aroma is actually somewhat hoppy. some citrus notes going on. chocolate roasted coffee malts. metallic. taste is similar to the nose. some roasty chocholate and coffee notes as expected from a porter before a floral, citrusy and even piney hop flavor cuts in. Finishes with an interesting combination of roasty bitterness and hops. Earthy yet still getting that metallic flavor. Well balanced. Medium bodied. soft carbonation. good balance of sweet and bitter here. just enough roastiness. def leans more towards the porter side of things but has noticeable hop presence and I ended up finding this one a bit interesting.

Dark pour, almost no head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and some roasted malts. Light body with really mild flavor. Slightly roasted mixed with some hops flavor. Finish is really like, almost no flavor.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of resin, chocolate, raisins. Tastes like a porter at first with a bitter hoppy resiny finish.

12 ounce bottle from mix pack, poured a cocoa-cola brownish black color, aromas of pine, grass, grapefruit, and roasted malt. Flavor is the same, was hoping that this had more porter charertistics but didn’t, decent beer overall.

jbruner (5287) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - MAY 22, 2012
Pours a dark brown, almost black on tap, with a thick off white head and little lacing. Aroma was malty, with fruit and roasted notes, with a bit of a piney citrus backbone. Taste was the hops up front, and finished with the fruit and malty notes. Clean on the palate but wanted a bit more bite personally. Interesting beer, surprised its from Sam Adams.

Nice black IPA that pours dark and has a head that goes on forever. Smell is of roast and alcohol. Good hops flavor and not too thick of a base. Nice beer for the style, right in the middle.

craig220 (313) - Crofton, Maryland, USA - MAY 20, 2012
Smells grapefruit, grass and slightly sweet. It poured a mahogany color with an off white head. Taste is really intense almost grape like taste immediately followed by the citrusy hops and finishes with the malt flavor. Feels medium bodied and slighly oily in the mouth.

thicksuds (451) - Massachusetts, USA - MAY 20, 2012
solid black IPA, could use a little more intensity with the hops, but all in all a nice tasting beer, a bit fruity, nice malt balance, but again just missing a little bit of overall intensity for a black IPA, so its not top tier but almost there.

Bottle. Pours deep amber-brown with a large tan head with good staying power and lacing. aroma of grapefruit, roasted malts, grass. Taste is dominated by roasted malts and citrus hops, with notes of caramel and chocolate. Bitter finish.

redlight (2325) - Orlando, Florida, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Draft @ redlight redlight. Piney hops on the Bose with hints of dark roasted malts. Pours black with a thick off white head. Hoppy upfront with dark fruit and some mild astringency. Not bad
