(22oz bottle) Pours an amber-brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, grapefruit, pine, peat, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, pine, caramel, light peat, and citrus. unclemattie (4358) - Georgia, USA - MAR 12, 2012
22oz Sam Adams bottle, Batch #1. Vintage 2012. Black pour. Thick creamy brown colored head. Aroma of berries, burnt malts, and citrus hops. Tastes of berries, sweet sugary fruit, citrus hops. Not as much dark malt flavor as I had expected. Mostly hop flavors, nice Simcoe© character. Smooth and creamy texture. Heavy bodied. I don’t really see Sam Adams making more of this, mostly because I like it so much. (3272) unclemike (3115) - Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA - MAR 12, 2012
Poured a great looking mostly black body with a large frothy dark beige head. Aroma is cola, toast, citrus rind and hint of chocolate. Fuller bodied with stronger carbonation, milkshake thick like fullness on this one. Flavor is a bit better than the aroma, lots of citrus rind, toast, chocolate, cola, grains. Solid beer, superspak (5497) - Michigan, USA - MAR 11, 2012
22 ounce bottle into tulip, batch 1. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger khaki head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty lacing on the glass, with a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big grapefruit, pine, and herbal hops; with a bit of roasted malt and caramel in the background. Decent aromas but was hoping for more dark malt presence. Taste of grapefruit, pine, herbal, caramel, roasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, and a bit of coffee. Good amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, caramel, roasted malt, and dark fruit on the finish for a bit. Some nice roasted malt backbone in the taste, but the hop flavors are still most prominent. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and lush mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall a very nice Black IPA, with plenty of flavor. I was hoping for a bigger roasted malt backbone, but it was still a very enjoyable offering.

Pretty dark brown pour with creamy tan head. Nice biscuit and toast almost burntness with citrus hoppiness on the nose. Flavor is more up front hop citrus sweetness and bite but finishes distinctively earthy, leather, resinously bitter. Really solid black ipa. jeremytoni (3058) - Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA - MAR 11, 2012

From the bottle. Slightly metallic aroma from the yeast, looks good, some roast on the palette followed by some bitterness. it’s ok but not something I’d drink again.
