Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter ( Need some clarification) brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles. Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew thats bold, mysterious, and full of flavor. Batch #1

The 0-65 tasting. Four guys, fourteen beers, average abv 12.9%, 65 mins! Clear dark red - amber beer. Fluffy pale tan head. Smooth palate, a little soft. Sweetish dark malt - light. Dark fruits underneath, slightly sour. Smooth and soft and a little unusual. Not bad in its own right, pretty weak as a Black IPA.

Bottle at the 0-65% Tasting, London - this beer was one of my contributions. Pours clear, red-brown with a tight, creamy light brown head. Bit of dark pine on the nose, dark malts. Medium sweet flavor with oily pine, dark malts, subtle cocoa, moderate roast. Medium bodied with fine to average, creamy carbonation. Sweet finish, lightly resinous, more dark malts, light charred wood, a bit of warmth, pine and cocoa. Great stuff. Very solid.

Very dark brown in color with a khaki head. The aroma is fairly herbal with a fair amount of licorice. Lots of pine in there, too. Quite a bit of molasses sweetness. The flavor is somewhat bitter, but also sticky and sweet. A fair amount of herbal and pine hop flavors. Sweet chocolate, molasses, and licorice dominate the flavor. More of a baltic porter than anything.
