Brewing innovation is about asking "what if?". What if we gave an IPA a new identity and used some of our favorite West Coast hops, with their grapefruit, piney, & tropical fruit character, in a lager? The result is this boldly hoppy & and flavorful brew with the crisp smoothness of a lager. Cheers!

MALT VARIETIES Samuel Adams two-row pale malt blend and Munich malt
HOP VARIETIES Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, Ahtanum, Cascade, Centennial, and Nelson Sauvin hops

Pours a clear light amber with frothy almond head. Aroma is strong citrus with sappy pine notes. Flavor has a slight initial bitter bite that slowly recedes across the palate. Nothing too stand-outish but there is nothing bad about this one.

Bottle from the summer 12-pack. Tickers delight, if not necessarily tasters delight. Looks and pours much like other SA beers, medium orange with a fine, filmy head. Nose is a bit sharper, though, with a dry, bracing quality that one expects from a crisp lager but backed up by abundant tropical notes. Flavor wasnt quite up to the promise for me, as it came together in a too indistinct sweetness, and the dry notes werent prominent enough for my tastes. Solid though.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a solid dark copper color with a two finger head of frothy, off white foam. The nose is hop forward with spicy noble hop notes (despite there being none used in the recipe), light florals, and trailing malt notes. Surprising body on the tongue, but not to the point of being heavy. Solid use of hops for a good bitterness, start to finish. The same spicy and floral notes come through. A little biscuit malt comes through, but you have to look for it. Medium bodied with a lingering bitter finish. I would mind a little more crispness, but still very good.

12oz bottle compliments of Zac. Really cool idea and they pulled it off. It had the easy refreshing aspects of a lager with just enough IPA hop bite to make it interesting. Well done.

Bottle. Pleasant, slightly fruity aroma with above average carbonation. Initial taste is sweet and hoppy, with faint citrus notes, but then overwhelmed by a bitter citrus mouth feel. Finish is quite bitter. I prefer other SA offerings.

12oz bottle pours crystal clear deep gold with copper hues and supporting an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up sweet malts, citrus hop notes and a fairly lager yeasty esteriness. Pretty nice. The taste starts with citrus bitter tangerine hops and then moving into complimentary grainy malt notes and sweet lager yeast fruity esters. It comes together nicely and the sweet esters are kept in check and only add a small facet to the flavor experience rather than take it over.

Draft at Moriartys. Hazy dark orange amber with an impressive frothy head. Strong floral/bready character. Noble hops floating on top. Feels like a mix of a Lager, IPA and Wheat Beer. Burnt orange. Sage. Pepper. Challah bread. Spicy marmalade. Full body. Surprisingly pretty good. Probably the best thing I have had from Sam Adams so far.

Bottle @ home. Pours clear dark orange with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is spicy, floral, and herbal hops with grainy malt. Flavor is moderate fresh hops and bitterness with supporting malt and a clean lager character and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper body with a frothy white head that fell to a thin film. The nose is nicely hoppy with just a little Simcoe and floral hoppiness. Some light caramel and toasty maltiness. The flavor is lightly bitter with a fairly nice dry toasty malt base. Some light lingering bitterness, but the finish is fairly short. Lighter bodied and easy drinking with light fizzy carbonation. About par for the course with SA beers.
