COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle. Appearance: Hazy amber with a small, foamy, off-white head. The head is gone in seconds. Aroma: Wheat and wet dog. Definitely some spice in there too. Taste: Clove, wheat notes, and perhaps a touch of banana. I was actually expecting a little more flavorwise. A little on the watery side in my mind. Palate: Medium-high carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel and a medium-short, wheaty finish. Overall: Tough to call on this one. Not terrible, just nothing worth remembering either. I would say skip it.

2009 Bottle - Pours out clear light brown with a small white head...aroma is malty and fruity, with nicely present spice, nut and dk grain...flavour is similar, slightly dirty on the end and a little thin, but overall a passable Dunkel...

12 oz bottle, part of a mixed 12 pack. Pours a hazy brown with a small off white head. Aroma is clove spice, banana, and wheat. Nice full bodied palate with some effervescence on the tongue. Flavor is dark wheat, clove, banana, and malt. Pretty straight forward dunkel. A bit better than I expected it to be.

Bottle at lithy’s Septemberfest. Pours hazy rust color with light beige head. The aroma is clove, toast, cucumber, and a bit of banana. The flavor is banana, raisin, mild spice, and a toasty finish. Fair enough beer.

Suttree (6392) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - SEP 6, 2009
I liked this more than I expected. Reddish brown, decent sized loose, spongey head. I got some rye, some banana, some toasty aromas, and the flaor was more rye. Nice and clean, no "off" flavors to speak of. Tasty. Sampled at lithy’s Septemberfest.

mmmbeer (1425) - Austin, Texas, USA - SEP 6, 2009
12 oz. bottle served in my trusty stein- poured a transparent light brown with shades of darkened caramel, low carbonation, white ring around the glass for a head. Aroma of roasted wheat and notes of caramel, banana, and hops. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is detectable and very enjoyable, small sensations of caramel and vanilla in the middle with clove in the background, finish is complete and highly enjoyable. Solid brew

Butters (4059) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - SEP 5, 2009
Sampled at Lithy’s Septemberfest tasting. Pours a semi-hazy dull gold with fair light tan head. Sweet, banana, vanilla, dark wheat. With just a hint of medicinal note on the finish. Medium body. Pretty decent for style, just a little light in color.

Cloudy medium copper body with a light khaki and yellowish head. The head is dense and long lasting. Light banana esters in the nose along with some pleasant floral hints. There is also some peanut butter in the overall sweet smelling beer. The taste is initially bread crusts with some banana peels coming through later in the drink. There is also some woody tobacco that throws off the finish. The banana peels add up as you drink and it gets cloying. Too bad the taste doesn’t quite measure up the pleasing smell.
