UPDATED: AUG 18, 2007 a very rich assortment of chocolate, caramel and orange.
Dark and malty with a great hop finish, a must have for Christmas nick76 (4402) - Tampa, Florida, USA - DEC 31, 2004
Certainly a good porter but not super memorable. It is has a definite chocolate characteristic and a full mouth feel like many quality porters and the hops are strong but not overpowering. Finish is bitter-sweet and dry. I’ll have another govn’a. BeerPrince (1701) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 30, 2004
Decent porter but a little thin for my festive wishes. Dark brown color. Small to medium head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts and slightly sweet. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is smooth and a little dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter changxao (104) - South Carolina, USA - DEC 29, 2004
12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with some red if held to the light, has a good head. Aroma is like your average porter with pine and Sammy undertones. Malty flavor with some caramel. Palate is pretty good, though somewhat thin. Overall a good offering. r464 (2370) - Earth, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 27, 2004
A nice dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma hints at coffee and chocolate. A bit malty with a bit of caramel and chocolate, though a bit watery. Not a favorite porter.

i bought the whole sampler pack just because that’s the only way to get this beer, and old fezziwig. cheers to the marketing crew at sam adams, because there’s no other way in hell i’m gonna buy sam adams light or their cranberry lambic. anyway, it’s a very typical porter, not bad in any way, but not a standout. definitely a solid offering, considering that it is sam adams, not a small-scale operation. thin astringent body, but nice roasty caramel aroma and flavor. just about makes that sampler pack worth it! dolemike1 (1289) - Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 26, 2004
Deep brown, tan head, aroma of caramel, and toasted malt, flavor similar, but with addition of some chocolate. Lightly bitter finish. Decent eboats (1115) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - DEC 25, 2004
Sam Adams...always a good decision. Black with no head. Aroma is mostly caramel and coffee with only a slight hint of chocolate. This is much better as it warms. Has a decent malt character with a chocolate hints. The caramel is the most noticable flavor. Ends with a mild bitter coffee taste. desurfer (1302) - Melbourne, Florida, USA - DEC 24, 2004
Pours pretty dark with little head. Aroma is very roasty, and the flavor is marked by notes of bitter chocolate and hops. Overall a smooth drinking porter. FOAMer (45) - Bartlesville, Oklahoma, USA - DEC 24, 2004
Beer pours with a dark mahogany color with some ruby highlights when held up to the light. Cream tan head is full and lasts thoughout the pint. Aroma is of roasted grains, chocolate malt is noticable, along with what appears to be roasted although the bottle does not say it is used. Light Munich malt aroma, nutty, buscut like, no real hop aroma to speak of(althogh some EKG would have been nice). Coffee aroma is present in this beer. Flavor is of noticeable chocolate malt flavors and light roasted flavor, some malt sweetness is evedent with a very light hop bitterness. Hop flavors on the light side, but balance the sweeness very nice. The finish is of the dark malts adding some dryness. Mothfeel is meduim, more like a brown porter more than a robust porter.
Overall this is a very nice brown porter, and a nice addition to the Sam Adams lineup. (At least here in OK)
