Fantastic aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, dark chocolate and a very light smoke. It poured a beautiful dark mahogany, with a large, foamy head that is very light tan in color and lasted long. Left a lot of lacing. A fantastic taste of dark chocolate, followed by a touch of caramel, then lots of milk chocolate with a very light touch of smoke. Full bodied, with a creamy thick texture. Average carbonation with a slightly bitter smoke finish with chocolate mixed in. I served this in a Pint at 45 degrees. I am a Porter and especially a Stout fan and this is one of the best Porters I’ve had. It is one excellent job by Samuel Adams. If you like Porters that are chocolate flavored you will love this one. If you like your Porters more bitter, you may or may not like this one. I loved it and will definitely have again. Definitely a favorite!!! Fulmonte21 (42) - USA - JUN 10, 2009
One of my favorites from the holiday pack. You can only get this one around the holidays. Great mellow porter flavor. This is truly one of my favorites. jerrykurl (40) - California, USA - FEB 6, 2008
Roast malt aromas that are more relaxed than other examples. Pours black/brown with mahogany highlights. No hop flavor or aroma to speak of. Full bodied with repressed roast flavors and so balanced that you almost don’t notice it. This is absolutely a current favorite of mine. bendz1 (87) - Ankeny, Iowa, USA - JAN 1, 2007
Great porter! Has a good chocolate/coffee/toffee flavor to it. Starts smoth and finishes smoth. Dark beer with a nice light tan head on it. Too bad it isn’t sold on it’s on. chrisbaar (10) - Dixon, Illinois, USA - DEC 4, 2007
Bottle as part of holiday 12 pk. The nose on this beer has a very pleasant sweet chocolate, honey, and cinnamon scent. This porter is dark and has a nice, silky mouthfeel. You can taste the oats and chocolate malt in this beer. Very smooth and delicious. A mild, complementary hop taste makes this a very tasty porter, the best in the holiday 12 thus far.

Posted from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Thea appearance is a brown color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is full of roasted malt, nuts and vanilla. The taste of cocoa, malt and nuts are blended well with the vanilla. An outstanding porter. lagermonkey (725) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JUN 4, 2005
I was really looking forward to this beer as I still pine for the Honey Porter and yes I know this is not it.
Pours a deep dark brown with a creamy tan head. Smells of smoky chocolate, roasted/burnt malt. Very rich nose. Lightly bitter and hints of almond.
Tastes as rich as it smells. Smoky roasted malt. A chocolate flavor that vasilates between bitter and milky. A nice hoppy finish, kind of spicy bitter hops instead of floral flavors. It is just so damn good. Wel-balanced and full flavored. Creamy mouth. Oh so tasty and goes down easily. This is not a huge knock-you-over-the-head style porter. Just well crafted and well balanced. Tasty as all get out and just a real honest, straight-forward brew. I love it. It’s been awhile since i’ve enjoyed a porter this much. Bravo! Hope to see it regular. bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 5, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Exceedingly dark reddish-brown with thin tan head and some nice lacing lines down the glass.
Aroma: Butterscotch, milk chocolate, licorice, plum & other dark fruit, and spicy Fuggles/Goldings.
Taste: Very nice balance of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, caramel and English hop spiciness. Certainly more bitter and roasted than the sweet and fruity smell indicated. Long Fuggles-like aftertaste.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, medium body (just right for Porter - not thin and not too Stout-like), very dry finish.
Overall: One of my favorite Porters. Also my favorite Sam Adams beer. Damn you Jim Koch for only having this in the Winter Pack. eggman (45) - Orlando, Florida, USA - SEP 6, 2006
12 oz. bottle, Best Taste Date: 3/06, purchased as part of the Sam Adams’ Holiday case...Pours a muddy chocolate with a large, rocky, chocolate milk colored head that lasted a good while...Smells of toasted caramel and chocolate malts with some very light spruce-like hops in the mix as well...Full bodied and creamy in texture with soft carbonation and a nice bitter finish...Flavor is extremely long with sweet chocolates in the front and roasted coffee in back. A bit of licorice in the very end...Overall, a wonderful porter, one of the best I’ve had. The appearance and mouth feel are just about as perfect as I’ve ever experienced. This beer only solidifies my opinion of Sam Adams’ as a very over-looked brewery by most craft fans. When they want to, they can turn out a very fine brew from time to time. Well done! Quite dark with a tanish head that was pretty frothy. Smell was wonderful... creamy chocolate hoppy aroma. Flavor was nice and toasty like a good porter should be. Some more chocolate in there and a touch of coffee. Mild sweetness brought out with some caramel flavor. This is definitely one of my favorite sam adams and overall a porter that can hold its own against micro and european porters.
