COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the traditional Scotch Ales, has a deep, intense flavor from its dark roasted malts. The addition of peat smoked malt adds a unique flavor of the Highlands to this complex brew.

Bottle. Pours with a near black, dark brown body that appears pretty much opaque. Medium tan and creamy head covers and leaves some lace. Decent retention. Aromas are strong, malty, brown sugar, caramelized. Lightly smokey, peat/phenolic smoke aromas. Bacon even (a bit excessive for me). BBQ, ash, maple, some esters. Dark fruits. Some alcohol. Flavors are smokey (too much for me), malty, bacon, estery and a bit uncommonly bitter for the style (but that does help balance). Neutral, to even a bitter balance (not normal), with some fruit, bready, burnt toffee flavors. Biscuity. Medium esters: plum, raisins and dark fruits. Long duration. Lightly woodsy in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, full bodied, warming, but ABV is decently well hidden in the taste. Carbonation might be a bit high for this beer (seems like most SA beers, aside from the super high ABV ones, are high in CO2), some carbonic bite. No astringencies. Pretty thick, finishes pretty dry for the style. Tasty, but the peat malt is a bit more than I enjoy for this style. Could also finish a touch sweeter and with less carbonation. Overall pretty tasty.

Opaque mahogany with a creamy tan head, sticky full body with medium-high carbonation.

Aroma: strong ans slightly acrid peet smoke, high minerality, and roast malt.

Taste: intense dark smokey malt, earthy herbal hop bitterness, and lingering peaty acridity.

Quite a bit more peat smoke and hop bitterness than most contemporary versions, and possibly more historically correct; but id really like more sweet grain, caramel, and roasted meat type of malt flavor in here.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate smoke, peat, chocolate, raisins and a touch of alcohol. It pours a dark reddish-brown with some transparency when held to the light and a one finger beige head that fades to a ring around the edges of the glass. The lacing left behind is some sporadic webbing. The flavor starts with chocolate and toffee. The finish has moderate-strong smoke, peat, and light-moderate alcohol. Full bodied with moderate carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. The alcohol can be a bit harsh at times and doesnt mix well with the smoke and peat.

I would never have thought Id rate a Sam Adams beer over a 4, but wow was this a great beer! Aroma was huge. Strong rich caramel malt with a hint of peat. Very full. Pour was a deep murky brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was awesome. Strong and full caramel and peat with an heavy earthiness. Very sweet and malty with no hop presence at all. Leaves the mouth sweet and sticky. Hides the alcohol deceptively well. Stunning beer!

Pour is an almost black with a small tan head. Aroma has lots of woody aspects along with a nice peat smoke. Flavor is again some peat smoke with a little dark cherry in there. Flavorfull and powerfull

Pours a deep rich black opaque with very fine head of small white foam. Nose is deep in rich roasty malt goodness. Taste is rich full mellow malt goodness with smoky peat tones. Body is full and satiny. very nice. Finishes nice and warmingly. if thats a word.

120z bottle from Archer Liquors. Very dark brown body that is near copper. A light khaki head on top. The aroma is apple and smoke with some sweet wood and a little bit of toffee. The taste is smoky old toffee and caramel.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2011 Pours a nearly opaque, dark cola color with a significant light tan head. Lots of lace. Aroma is prunes and dark roast coffee. Dark fruit comes through in the taste as well, along with sweet dark roasted malt, molasses, honey and espresso. Smoky, too! Pretty busy, but well balanced and delicious. Really, a wee heavy on steriods. Alcohol warmth arrives after the swallow. Yum.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2011 Pours dark brown with a thin light tan head. Aroma is herbal, sugar sweet, bready cereal. Flavor is slightly fruity, grapes, burnt caramel, a bit creamy. Sweet and a bit grassy; incredibly drinkable. Well done on this one.
