Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate citrus hops, light chocolate, and a touch of fruit. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a two finger khaki head with good retention that leaves behind some nice rings for lacing. The flavor starts with with some fruitiness and a hint of chocolate. The finish has moderate citrus hops, a touch of pine, and faint roast. Medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation and a somewhat soft mouthfeel. SSSteve (4006) - - MAR 26, 2011
bottle. almost black beer under a large, sudsy, beige head. aroma is mostly juicy hops with little to no black malt notes. flavor starts out like any quality ipa with lots of bitter citrus hops, but the finish is where you get the roasty, bakers chocolate notes. palate is a little chalky with a medium body. carbonation is somewhat high. solid all around. tmoreau (4365) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAR 26, 2011
From 12 oz. bottles, sampled first in plastic, and then for better review, in a SA lager glass, during the Longshot VIP Tasting at the Chicago Marriott. The color was black/brown, with a decent amount of creamy, off white/light tan, fairly lasting head foam, and clingy ribbons and waves of lacing. The aroma was roastiness, coffee, and citrus, with a touch of resin, that became more noticeable in the flavor. Decent malt content to slightly tame the hops, and some dry cocoa hints were also present there. The body was medium, with good carbonation, and some of the bitterness combined with pleasant dryness to make up the finish. Nicely crafted, and a deserving winner! vyvvy (6470) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - MAR 25, 2011
Pours very dark brown with a large soapy tan head. The aroma has citrus & piny hops along with a malt presence that has cream, chocolate, light coffee and a stout like smoothness and some non-bitter roastiness. Medium crisp body that has quite a bit of the small micro-like carbonation. The flavor starts off with roasty malt that has some roasty bitterness that was missing on the aroma. There is some coffee, dark chocolate and cream and just a bit of hoppiness. The finish is where the hops show through with pine, smooth citrus and some earthiness. Quite enjoyable. Black pour with a big, frothy tan head. Aroma is pretty hoppy, citrus/floral. Flavor reveals a lot of dark/roasty/chocolatey notes. The citrus comes out on the back end. This one was a bit decieving since it was so hoppy up front. Liked it!

Super pour and appearance, jet black, lots of head which is in a good shape.
Taste is very sweet, and has a wood or oaky quality that is coming out pretty strong, almost too strong. Definitely intense, tasting coffee in there as well. Has a big hop presence as well, the way its mixing in with the malt is bringing it down a notch for me. But all in all a solid black IPA, a little strong for me but still good. Worth a try but not something that should be in the regular rotation for Sam. SphinxTX (2875) - Mata Gorda, Texas, USA - MAR 23, 2011
Bottle. Pours a black with tan head. Aroma of sharp pine and some dark roast and light fruit esters. Flavor is very much the same and flavors blend very well together with a nice malt back bone. Mouthfeel is medium body with high carbonation. Overall, pretty solid brew!

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours black with frothy 1-finger tan head. Nose is black patnet and choc malty, with resiny hops, cacao. Tastes rich, complex, very resiny hoppy with a nice dark malt bill and cacao flavor that compelements the hops well. Rockcrawler (197) - Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA - MAR 23, 2011
