Loved it malty with a hint of hops and extremely smooth. Want a six pack please efecher (70) - Long Valley, New Jersey, USA - APR 11, 2012
Out of the 3 varieties in this year’s LongShot pack, this is the winner for me. You get the impact of the high alcohol content with the classic taste of the Alt style. Derf definitely knows what he’s doing here. Hopefully they decide one day to at least make this a seasonal... RolkaNation (141) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - APR 30, 2012
Appealing burgundy/brown in color, very clear, pretty thick slightly tan head. Nice looking brew. Very good aroma highlighted by notes of booze, toffee, plum, raisin. Nicely balanced. Wow, taste is even better! More of the same from the nose; very flavorful. Thick and viscous on the palate, low carbonation. Quite a nice surprise all around here! Very reminiscent of a belgian quad minus the yeast and spice. Fantastic beer! bbrock81 (317) - Le Mars, Iowa, USA - AUG 19, 2012
Pours cloudy brown with a small tan head, perfect alt/doppel appearance. Aroma is super sweet, syrup, raisin, malt. Flavor is slightly less sweet, but still very syrupy, malty, dark fruit. Palate is quite nice, light carbonation. Overall a nice beer, if a bit on the sweet side. The high alcohol doesn’t really show. More of a doppel than an alt, though. Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a deep brown color with a slight reddish hue. Upon pouring there is a giant off white head. The head is composed of big bubbles, but yet has quite a persistence and lasts for some time. Over time it fades and leaves some very nice lacing.
Smell – The aroma is big in malt and sweetness. The malt is mainly roasty in nature with nice biscuity aromas mixed in. For the sweetness, it is composed largely of a toffee aroma with some lighter dark fruit aromas mixed in.
Taste – A heavy sweet malt favor meets the tongue. It is a bit of roasted malt with some sweet cherry bread. Toward the middle the fruit flavors of some cherry and even a little citrus work their way in mixing well with the nice roasty malt flavor. These flavors persist to the end and finish off the taste by mixing with a light boozy flavor that leaves a very nice warming sweet flavor in the mouth.
Mouthfeel –The body of this beer is quite creamy and thick. You can almost chew this one. The carbonation level is just below average and helps to accentuate the nice thick, chewy, creamy body. Mixing the wonderful body and nice carbonation level with the warming feeling that the alcohol brings it makes for an overall very enjoyable mouthfeel.
Overall – This was a nice brew. A nice thick body with some strong sweeter flavors. A very nice sipper with great flavors and a nice feel.

I didn't take any extra notes when I tried this beer for the first time but I'm gonna try it again and update my comments.

Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with a medium-sized tan head that leaves quite a lot of lacing. Aroma is caramel and toffee, quite a lot of cherry, some spicy hops notes. Flavor is quite sweet with a long, sweet, fruity finish. Lots of toffee, cherry, a touch of smokiness, some bittersweet roasted character. Chewy mouthfeel. Drinks more like a strong bock to me. beergavond (6) - - JUN 4, 2012 does not count
This alt pours a gorgeous red-brown ruby. The head is a healthy 2 figers in a tulip. The aroma, which is way better a little warmer, continues until it hits the tongue. There is good bitter-malt balance. I suppose experts of German beers could better comment on the malt varieties but they are sweet candy-ish to me. Very smooth on the tongue and throat for 9.3 % . Very tasty for a strong alt bier. dwyerpg (6413) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - SEP 29, 2012
This is pretty good but definitely sticky sweet. It has a sugary character to the body but doesn’t taste as strong as it is. Pretty good.
