Appearance: Pours out a black body with a growing, steady, dark tan head. Sporadic lacing on the drop.
Smell: Roasted malt, heavily toasted malt, Dutch cocoa, dried fig, oatmeal, light spice, even lighter alcohol, and a small sprinkling of Morton’s salt.
Taste: Roast, toffee, with plenty of melted chocolate and coffee spiked with spirits. Moderately sweet. Fruitiness of dehydrated figs and black currants. Very low hop character, low bitterness. Faint but noticed salty-ish iodine twang underneath. Puckish pinch of alcohol. Drying, silken, roasty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. The mouthfeel, it’s quite smooth.
Overall: Almost really nice except for a slight salty, iodine quality. If I wanted salty, soy, I’d pop open an old bottle of Triple Bock.
Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose/taste of star anise, roast chocolate, black coffee, raisins, dark fruits and molasses. Finishes with anise soaked in alcohol. Full mouth feel. queenholly (3623) - South Whitley, Indiana, USA - MAR 30, 2012
Bottle. Molasses, dark roasted malt, chocolate aroma. Black with a small brown head. Anise, charcoal, burnt coffee, molasses flavor with a long dry bitter finish. Overall, I found the flavor a bit harsh. wlajwl (6801) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - MAR 29, 2012
Aroma is yeast, roasted malts and an off-aroma that is hard to define. The flavor is toffee, fruit, roasted malts and an acidity/tartness to it into the finish. There was that off-flavor/aroma that popped up but the rest of it was pretty decent. puboflyons (3431) - Allenstown, New Hampshire, USA - MAR 29, 2012
From the one time batch with an expiration date of Aug 2012. The pour is rich dark black with a tremendous foamy dark tan head that lingers. On the nose there are dark malts, coffee, and a slight alcohol bitterness. The body is medium to full but also very smooth and creamy. The vague sweetness up front lasts a milisecond because an acidic bitterness takes over the taste. Still, Joe Formanek is livin’ the dream.

12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a solid non transparent black color, low carbonation, light brown colored white around the glass for a head, some lacing. Aroma of molasses, darkened malt, alcohol, and dark chocolate, and Sanka- uhh... Hits the mouth with wide body, malt tastes like it had some dark chocolate added to it- and just left there to die, middle has some bitterness which develops a silk feel with some warming on the finish. Slightly above average impy stout. DocLock (10683) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 28, 2012
Pours as jet black and with as dark brown a head as any beer I’ve ever seen. Nose is rich black patent and choc malts, big hops, cacao, char, and some definite vegetal and peppery notes. I can’t say I’ve ever smelled this profile before. Tastes rich, very choc and patent malty, with backup hops, roasty charred malt, and late bitterness. This one is a bit rough around the edges, as the flavors seem very odd, and get odder late. SphinxTX (2875) - Mata Gorda, Texas, USA - MAR 27, 2012
Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma of dark roast and dark chocolate, flavor is much the same with a very subtle hint of smoke with a dark roasted bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel with low-medium carbonation. Overall, a pretty basic, run of the mill imperial stout. mcjay (463) - Neenah, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 27, 2012
Pours black with a foamy brown head. There is a strong roasted aroma with a hint of chocolate. The body is smooth and dry with a little hoppy bitterness in the middle and a slightly sweet finish. Arayaga2 (2197) - portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 27, 2012
Oil black with 2" of beautiful cocoa brown head. Aroma and taste are both "roasty with chocolate notes", and there’s a mildly cloying treacle sourness with faint sprucey hops into the finish, along with some alcohol. Relatively thick mouthfeel is about right for drinkability in the style.
