Fresh bottle by JUN 2013. Nose lightly of roast with some tar and a hint of ash in there, some burnt notes and perhaps licorice. Dark brown looks black enough, tannish head. Taste sweet with roast and faint coffee, syrupy sugar on the sides, there is a hint of nuts there but it’s more like they’ve been glazed in sugar solution and caramelized over heat. Lightly fruity, very crsip full body, very low bitterness and no signs of hops. This is a lot like a lot of the sweeter East German Schwarzbiere but without the lagery body.
Brown color with a smallish light tan head. Nutty, toasted malt and syrup scents. Sweet start. Pithy nut and malt flavors. Somewhat generic sweetness. Sugar glazed nuts anyone. 4/13

Bottle - Pours brown/reddish brown, white head, somewhat creamy. Aroma of dark sweet malt, like chocolate flavored coffee, with pancakes. Watered down. Can taste the pecan flavor but it is a bit watered down with tobacco juice.

Pours a deep dark copper color that appears almost black in the glass with mahogany edges and a one finger off-white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.
Slightly smokey aroma with a balance of roasted and sweet malt notes. Deeply roasted notes at first with hints of coffee bean, oatmeal and toast followed by caramel, toffee and nut. I’m not really picking up much maple/syrup but the pecans begin to show as it warms.
On the lighter end of medium bodied with a combination of dry roast, sweet malt and pecan notes. Again, I’m only picking up the faintest bit of maple but the pecan stands out a lot more than in the nose, especially in the finish. Slightly smokey and acrid up front with some toast, burnt malt, coffee bean and oatmeal but this is balanced by sweeter notes of caramel, toffee, hazelnut and some biscuit. A: Black/red. Some see through. Tan head.
S: Caramel mostly, also coffee, chocolate, toffee.
T: Caramel, coffee, toffee are dominant. Pecan, chocolate, maple are there too.
M: Creamy. Very light feeling in the mouth.

I can definitely find the maple syrup and pecans in the aroma - it’s like a beer pancake. I am also getting roasted malt, some milk chocolate and a cappuccino-like coffee scent. Very good and complex aroma for such a mainstream brewery. Looks great; brown, nearly black with off white head that is somewhat sticky and dense. Flavor is roasty, bitter with tons of pecan and some syrup in the aftertaste. A little too sweet; I don’t think I could drink more than one, but I knew what I was getting into when I bought this. Weak palate, but in my opinion that’s what most separates craft beers from their mass-produced counterparts. I can’t believe how much I liked this offering from Sam Adams. Very complex and unique. Pours unclear dark thick amber with a creamy sandy colored head and a bit of a ring of lacing. The aroma brings toasted malts and fresh nutty maple as well. Found in the Spring sampler pack, picked up at Costco for $22.99 a case. Not bad. Aroma is definitely nutty, like crushed walnut/pecan shells. A touch of alcohol also shows up. Subtle maple syrup also makes an appearance as does a Tootsie Roll pop with just a bit of root beer. It smells kind of sweet too, but it doesn’t come thru on the flavor.
I think with a bit more complexity and sweetness this beer would be great. Light sweetness brings out the maple/pecan flavors, but the porter notes are lacking a bit. It’s a pretty simple beer and done well. No complaints.
