So I guess Sam Adams has been considering bringing back either the Rauchbier or the Honey Porter so they bottled a batch of each and took them to various places for taste tests. This came in a bottle marked Samuel Adams Sample B. Pours a brown color with a hint of white head. What you get is a nice sweet malty beer that is balanced out by a bit o’ smoke. Reminds me of a campfire sausage. I adore smoked beers and was really excited to get a hold of this one and was not dissapointed. This isn’t as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla stuff but it’s damn good and it would be nice to see on the shelves as a regular product. BeerandBlues2 (13323) - Escondido, California, USA - AUG 14, 2006
Draught at 2006 Craft Lager Festival. Pours amber with a fizzy tan head. Aroma is smoked bacon, hot dogs, malt (meal), yeast (dough), turkey and sweat. A medium bodied lager with light smoke flavor. Red and considerable carbonation. While there is nothing wrong with it, Sam Adams is making a smoked beer for people who don’t actually want a smoked beer. It needs more smoke. hopscotch (11101) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 18, 2005
Draft at Spring Brewtopia 2005... Crystal clear, amber lager with a small, fizzy, off-white head. The nose is of sizzling, smoked bacon. The flavor is medium sweet and smokey. Hopped well for balance. Medium to full-bodied and very creamy. Fizzy carbonation. Moderately bitter, lightly tangy, dry, smoked finish. Fairly mild smoked lager, but really good nonetheless. I’m a big fan of rauchbiers so I’m going to rate them accordingly unless they downright suck. This one doesn’t. I hope they eventually bottle the stuff. Sampled at brewdopia. Copper hue with a small, creamy, white head. Butterpopcorn, smoke, caramel, nutty aroma. Lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter flavor becomes a moderately acidic, moderately bitter finish. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The bottom line is: a bit too acidic for my tastes. Also, *snrk* this was one of the top five most interesting beers in the second sessions. 04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05 I’ll be damned, a rauchbier from Boston Brewing. Pretty amber pour with minimal white head. Aromas are light, smokehouse (meaty), caramel. Full bodied, kind of sticky, thickly malty. Mild combination of smoke and malt with an unfortunately spicey note of wood pulp. Like many SA brews, this one exhibits great balance and drinkability but tends toward the sweet side. It ain’t great, but it ain’t no joke. PLEASE bottle this stuff Mr.Adams. 2004 draught @ Redbones. Pours a good looking auburn-amber, clear and filtered but otherwise bright and appealing. Small yellow/cream colored head. Aroma has hints of light smoked wood, a touch of roasted malt and some hints of light toffee. Flavor begins with a lightly sweet malt flavor; hints of molasses and caramel. Flavor blends in to the smoke with a pretty good, real smoky taste. Medium bodied, smooth and creamy. No huge complex flavors, but a decent, very well balanced rendition. Had this on tap at the JP brewery. Decent smoked malt aroma. I personally think this could use a lot more smoke, but overall it tastes like a slightly darker and more firm version of the lager combined with a touch of smoke. More smoke needed.
