No disrespect to Belhaven or McEwans, but I like this brew better. I love the extra peat smoked malts and the smoked rich flavor. The worst mistake in the world by The Boston Beer Company was to stop brewing this. TedStryker (5) - Oceanside, New York, USA - APR 5, 2005 does not count
Back in law school, this was probably my favorite beer. We called it liquid smoke because of that peat smoked flavor. It sucked that they stopped production on it in 2000. hey have brought it back, but I have not found it in New York. Billicus (291) - @RED BHUT JOIKIAS!, Paulsboro, New Jersey, USA - OCT 1, 2011
Hands down best beer I’ve ever had, though many would disagree, its my taste buds, Iam the rater.
appearence, nice amber color, perfect in the sunlight, little bubbles forming, shimmer pretty
taste wonderful blend of Malts, a gaint brew, smooth and mellow, the Hops add to balance out the malt, and the finish awesome peat smoke note comes through, makes me feel like Iam in Scottland in a Flog pub or something.
smell, sweet malt and slight flora hop notes

Reddish brown in color and a sweet aroma of cherries. Hoppy finish and a mellow scotchy taste. Great beer. fgv1977 (6) - Hooterville, Georgia, USA - AUG 9, 2007 does not count
Good, good, good! My favorite Sam Adams brew. If I knew where to buy 6 packs of this I would be set. So far I’ve only found it in the variety pack, which has on 2 or 3 Scottish Ale’s out of 12, I think.

I am rating this from distant memory, but I do remember a lovely thick, dark, and sweet beer. Very sad to hear about its discontinuance. twocycle99 (61) - Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA - MAR 25, 2002
Better than average while it was available. It will be missed!! masedawg (156) - Statesville, North Carolina, USA - JUL 12, 2005
Amber/Ruby in color. Nice lasting head with good lacing. Rich aroma. Interesting flavor that leaves a nice impression on the palate. Great brew. VitaminR (540) - Colorado, USA - FEB 14, 2008
Burnt sugar, smoke, and maple nose. Reddish brown, long lasting head. Big and malty. Heavy body, carbonation is almost like nitrogen, creates a long smooth finish. Not one of my favorite styles, but this was a very enjoyable beer.
