COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Samuel Adams® Summer Ale is an American wheat ale. This summer seasonal uses malted wheat, lemon zest and Grains of Paradise, a rare pepper from Africa first used as a brewing spice in the 13th century, to create a crisp taste, spicy flavor and medium body. The ale fermentation imparts a background tropical fruit note reminiscent of mangos and peaches. All of these flavors come together to create a thirst quenching, clean finishing beer perfect for those warm summer days.

Aroma of hay and grass, slightly roasty, golden to amber with white head. Light bitterness, medium sweet. This is a lively ale, with an oily texture. Good malted grain flavor with a clean finish.

BBD: 9/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 30A Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer (base style: 1D American Wheat Beer)

AROMA: Bready/wheaty base malt is moderately strong along with a citrusy lemon garnish. Slight spicy scent as well. No hops or esters (none needed) 9/12

APPEARANCE: Dark golden hue over a hazy, bubbly body. Moderate white foam mostly dissipates. Decent retention and lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: A bready/dough taste accounts for a strong portion of the palette; though a strong spicy flavor is almost as prominent. Interesting balance of lightly sweet wheat taste and mild tingling spice. Lemon flavor emerges as it finishes which complements the previous characteristics quite well. Some lingering malt and spice flavors, but otherwise clean. No hop presence to speak of; no esters either. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation; more smooth than crisp. Somewhat refreshing; though it’s a bit heavy at 5.3% ABV to work as a true session beer. A little less alcohol and body would be totally crushable. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I used to dislike this, but now I appreciate it as a classic American Wheat Beer + spice. It’s what a summer beer should be. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 40/50

Aroma’s wheat malt, wet grain, carbonic tang. Flavor’s similar to nose, on the sweet side - too sweet for me.

Not much of an aroma, not much lemon. Not that thirst quenching either. Did have a fluffy white head that lasted awhile. More of a malted wheat taste than lemon, not spicy. If you are seeking a fruit beer, there are much better ones available.

My favourite summer time beer to drink. I wish they brewed this year-round!

Hazy light golden-straw color with a lively head of white foam. Peppery, grassy, and lightly zesty lemon characters in the aroma and flavor. Sam Adams variation of Blue Moon.

Draft Pint in March 2015 - Hazy Pale Gold in colour. Small white head. Malty; toasty malts, caramel. Fruity; citrus lemon. Spicy; peppery. Sweetish malty fruity throughout. Not particularly exciting, but easy drinking and quite refreshing. (2015-03)
