UPDATED: DEC 22, 2013 This beer used to be a favorite of mine, but that was 12 years ago. The crispness it used to have has been replaced by an almost cloying sweetness, and it lacks the almost roasted note of so many years ago. In any case, present day version, medium reddish copper, OK head. Little aroma, vaguely sweetish. Flavor is toffee and molasses oriented. I simply can’t pick out the wheat in this weizen, and it has no apparent esters. This beer now just makes me sort of sad. RERATE - no change in December of 2013. Another good beer out of the sam adams gift pack. Good taste with a nice off white head sfontain (851) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - APR 13, 2004
Aroma is sweet and malty with some caramel and some spice, somewhat like a pale ale. Pours a thin beige head that subsides into just a ring; pretty, ruby/orange color. Flavor is slightly sugary-sweet, a bit malty with very little hops; some alcohol warmth but no real alcohol flavor. Body is a bit thin for a winter beer. tiggmtl (4545) - East York, Ontario, CANADA - APR 13, 2004
Caramel, spice, a hint of alcohol in the sweet malty aroma. Pillowy tan head that lasts well and laces nicely on dark copper body. Flavour is a touch subdued although bitterness/spice and malt are nicely balanced. I really enjoyed the medium body of this beer with the nice thick mouthfeel you'd expect from a wheat beer. It's a shame the flavour doesn't pack as much as the aroma suggests but this is a good, if simple, weizenbock. Bottle. crzybob77 (530) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - APR 12, 2004
The taste certainly fits as a winter brew. The aroma and flavor have a very nice spice to them. The bitterness and sweetness tie in nicely. I had no idea how strong this was until i saw the alcohol rating on this site.

A nice dark bock, with strong malt flavor and an underlying sweetness. This is a good cold weather beer. rajendra82 (1078) - Alpharetta, Georgia, USA - MAR 20, 2004
UPDATED: JAN 4, 2006 Deep amber slightly color bordering on light brown. Minimal carbonation, although lacing is not bad at first. I smelled almost nothing except alcohol and a bit of honey. Tasted kind of sour with a twangy slightly dry aftertaste. Hints of honey, oak, coffee, grain, and plum on the nose. Almost no hops detectable. Mouthfeel is extremely thin and watered down. The beer has a body too weak to cover the alcohol. The overall experience was like a weak beer with a shot of whiskey thrown in for alcohol. Drinkable, but way below most other seasonal beers.Bodomite (34) - USA - MAR 12, 2004
The second bottle pulled from the 12 pack holiday sampler was the Winter Lager, which is also available separately. The last time I had it was few years back on-tap. And I remember not being too fond of it then. I hadn’t tried the bottled version since then, so this was a pretty good chance to see if my tastes had changed.
Poured out of the new Sammy style bottle, the beer looked deep reddish amber in color with a thin and fleeting head. The aroma was a bit off-putting at first with a rotting wood quality, but got better as the time went on. During the later stages of the drink, I could detect cinnamon, and nutmeg via the nose.
The taste was very sweet, with spices providing a weaker counterbalance. Like the smell, the taste took some getting used to, but eventually was quite pleasant. Not the kind of taste I would crave, but nothing offensive about it.
The body was thick and syrupy, with a tongue coating quality. The thickness made me think of a dopplebock with spices at times. The spices opened up a lot more as the beer warmed up, and the taste balanced out better too.
I guess I liked it better this time around. Either they have improved the recipe, or my tastes have grown more accustomed to the type of flavors this beer exhibits. Whatever the case may be, I will probably not avoid it any more.
A dissapointment. Tasted very bitter and overspiced. Looks nice and smells nice but not very good when it comes to taste. BUrunner (92) - Indiana, USA - MAR 9, 2004
Interesting spicy flavor. A bit bitter and thin. Best when paired with food. Zeswaft (1768) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAR 8, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2006 Tastes exactly like the vienna style. nutty and wheaty. The 7% alcohol helps compensate for the full feeling you get drinking more than two of them.
