It’s very cold on this May day in Northern Michigan, to the point that the thought of this beer sounded good. But. Alternating busy, garish tones of vanilla, licorice and spices in a muddied, sweetish malty body. Nothing much to suggest that it is a wheat beer; unlike Moonglow or Aventinus this one just seems like a spiced, artifice driven bock. duff (5484) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - DEC 28, 2001
UPDATED: JAN 16, 2003 Not so bad, not too complex, and its hard to belive that its a weizenbock. Not really a good example of the style i suppose, but not too bad a beer. muzzlehatch (4963) - Beloit, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 3, 2002
UPDATED: MAR 11, 2003 Bottled, 2001-2. Quite possible I had a stale bottle of this, as the whole thing seemed rather flat and old. I got some interesting spiciness: maybe a hint of currants, cardamom and nutmeg; and an ok level of maltiness; but little hop presence and a stale old leftover feel all the way through. Not one of Sammy's best.

Rerate: my 2nd bottle is significantly better, though still not great. I don't get a lot of spice here, but the bocky malt is pretty decent.
Pretty good bock. Typical winter beer. Too weak for me though............... UnionMade (621) - Connecticut, USA - NOV 17, 2002
I don’t really care for this beer. It’s supposedly a weizenbock, but it tastes more like a dunkel lager. Nothing in it really appeals to me.

No aroma really.
A bit of maltiness that quickly disappears.
Decent creamy, white head.
Typical. jazz88 (2681) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 27, 2002
Tap. Dark amber color with a fair head. How could they ruin a style I like. Rather weak and not flavorful. Crit (4024) - Surrey, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 10, 2002
Amber with lasting creamy off white head.Small intense bead.Good malt nose.Taste starts ok but turns slightly antiseptic at the end. JoeM500 (1908) - Crown Point, Indiana, USA - DEC 27, 2002
A decent American lager with a surprisingly high alcohol content. This was served WAY too cold at Wise Fools Pub in Chicago. It’s rich nutty flavor and hints of wheat showed their faces at the end of the pint (as it warmed). iwantalambic (1478) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JAN 17, 2003
Another pretty decent selection from Sam Adams. . .doesn't have the great weizen bock flavours of sweet nuts, cloves and bananas, but it quite a bit more interesting that othe macro swills. . .light red brown, some floral hops in the nose. . .slightly interesting malty flavour, I would drink another.
