UPDATED: DEC 12, 2017 Pint from tap at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. Good representation of the traditional English IPA, less hoppy than the American ones, but well rounded. Clear, light, hoppy-ish and medium carbonated. The_Osprey (9721) - Richmond, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 10, 2017
Dec 2017 - 550ml bottle at home in Richmond as 'Samuel Smith India Ale', 5%, gold foil topped, BB Jun 2018. Translucent amber orange, lightly sparkling, foamy off-white head leaves dotted lacing. Aroma is dusty, musty, faint spent malts, spiced orange peel and crushed mint. But all faint and musty. Body is light and frothy with tingly carbonation. Taste is muted, sodawater base, a little buttery malt, used tea bag, lightest citrus, dusty and musty throughout, some salted rusk in the finish. Average to below average stuff. Taste is bitter, caramel, toffee, earthy hop, citrus, solid. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, caramel earthy bitter aftertaste. Overall, this is quite a good ESB. drpimento (3815) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 6, 2017
Man I just don't quite get the British distinction for an India Pale Ale. I understand that it's milder than the American version. But the original idea being that it was going to be higher hopped and alcohol to make the trip to India. I mean alcohol here is only 5% so I don't see how that's sufficient back in the days without Refrigeration to do that. I've had some of their esb's that seem to be a little hoppier than this. It's good drinking beer but I just don't get the IPA part of it.

Tap at Earl of Lonsdale, Portobello road. Clear golden/copper body, small white head. Fruity notes in the aroma. Creamy texture with bitter, fruity taste and sweet notes of honey and fig. Overall OK! scotty (1235) - SCOTLAND - AUG 26, 2017
UPDATED: AUG 26, 2017 A nice change from the very pale, very (in some cases overly) hoppy IPAs I've had recently. Lovely balance of malt and hops, the finish goes on for ages. Cracking brew!
