UPDATED: DEC 12, 2003 Maybe I was just in a bad mood when I first tried this. I'm a big fan of the Samuel Smith family of beers, but this just didn't cut it for me. I thought it was biting, almost rusty-tasting. I thought it was sour and abrasive to the palate and on the finish. Probably goes better with food (I was drinking on an empty stomach as is too often the case!) Overall, its certainly not bad, but just not as good as I would have hoped! RERATE 12/12/03: Tried it again and really liked it a lot better. Much silkier, tastier and fuller than I originally remembered. Nice velvety palate. mixamatt (427) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 4, 2003
Caramel chocolate, mild hop sour aroma.Dark reddish brown appearance.Smokey Dry coffee flavor with butterscotch, sugared walnuts and pecans.Gets a bit sour and watery at the finish. krdktq (17) - Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 2, 2003
I expected a little more from this stout because of it's rep. I like the sweetness of it, but only rate it a middle of the road stout. jerohen (2307) - Bussum, NETHERLANDS - OCT 28, 2003
UPDATED: APR 25, 2008 Very dark coloured, initially large brown head. Smoked, port-whiskey like lactic aroma. Tastes like a saturated sugar solution with some fruity and smoked elements. Sourness in palate. Very unusual beer, not really my style. Some extra points for originality.

Aroma is meaty, smoked and fruity (apple) resulting in a cider/sherry/whiskey-like smell. Back coloured with a red glow and an offwhite head. Bacon taste, sweet, malts and apples. Bit sour in the end. Very interesting brew, but I can't say I really love its taste. caesar (7165) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - OCT 28, 2003
Dark black color, medium brown head. Smoked aroma of roasted malts, salami, rye and bread. Taste is more sweet, obvious candy sugar, bit fruity. Finish of sugarwater, dry palate. imdownthepub (14751) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - OCT 26, 2003
Bottled, Pasteurised. Deep black colouu with big, long lasting, tan head. Beautifully presented beer, nice and still, plenty of body, but it would be much improved as a Bottle conditioned beer, the life has gone and there is a boiled cabbagy note. Not the best stout because of this, there are much more interesting ones around. There is a sweet fruity background, with a dry bitterish note. Good, but not that good! shadey (2140) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - OCT 21, 2003
Nice head after pour. Smells great, and beautiful dark color. Goes down smooth with a great flavor. BrianO (138) - Ambler, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 21, 2003
Dark with good head to start. Aroma is roasted, some malt, and maybe some chocolate. Mouthfeel is nice with good carbonation and medium bodied. Has a rich and sweet flavor with still a slightly dry finish. Hint of oatmeal but only b/c I'm looking for it. Tasty.
