Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Re-Rate 10/13/02: The beer pours a full bodied black color, the generous head is chocolate brown, the lace lays in sheets upon the Chimay Goblet I drink it from, as I think goblets and chalices do more for stouts than the traditional Guinness tulip glasses. When you bring this to your lips for the first taste, the roasted malt, oats, caramel, and an almost molasses like tone greets you. Front is malt sweet; the middle is full, rich, creamy and somewhat chocolate like, the finish is where you find the Kent hops at the semi-sweet dry finish, and a long lasting toasted grain after taste. Stouts are not meant for everyone, as much as I love them, many will find them bitter, overpowering and totally lacking in merit, but then I feel that way about most Lagers/Pilsners, but to me this is what makes beer and beer drinkers so interesting, the difference in taste and opinions.

Coffee with brown sugar aroma, a hint of chocolate. Incredibly dark, almost purple, with a huge cappuccino head. The head looks like pancake batter, with assorted sized bubbles bursting on top, some lace. Great coffee flavour, strong roasted bitterness. Has a rich full silky texture, and a fabulous liquorice aftertaste. A Wonderful Sweet Stout!

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2003 Yessssss! Beautiful! Strong wood, smoke, coffee, nutty aroma. Kinda like a campfire. The taste was better than the aroma. Wonderful blend of coffee, smoke, nutty, wood, licorice, alcohol, and more. The color was black black, with just a hint of red when held directly in front of a 100 watt light bulb. The carbonation was quite low... which I like in a stout. A hint of sweetness in the aftertaste rounded out the flavor. This is one of the best stouts in the world. Yesssssss! Yesssss! Yesssssss!

Deep brown color with a hint of red, almost opaque.Malty aroma, strong full malty taste, slightly bitter aftertaste. A nice sweet stout. *Note-The first time I tried this, my husband and I nicknamed this the Bacon Beer. It tasted overwhelmingly like bacon and maple syrup. I didnt notice that at all this time. Maybe I had a bad bottle. Much better the second time around.
