High and lasting brown head. Clear red-brown color. Caramell and other light roasted malts give a fine complex aroma. Sweet caramell taste with a balanced bitterness that lingers. Tap at Opening Gala SF beer week 2011. Pours a medium copper/ bright orange with a thin white head. Aroma is woody, barrel, not too sweet or over oaked, some light whiskey notes, earth, then bready malts, toast, light burnt edge it it, and medium floral hops. Flavor is toast, biscuit, burnt wood, whiskey/bourbon, grassy hops, light yeasty dough notes, nutty, with medium hoppy bitter finish with some mineral as well. Tasted on tap at the 10th Bistro Double IPA Festival on 2/6/2010. This California Common pours a medium orange gold color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, caramel and yeasty. A medium bodied California Common. The malts are fruity and sweet, orange and yeasty. A slightly touch of wood, mostly at the finish. It has that ‘steam beer’ ester and yeast, but with a lot more ester and yeast. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet. Draft at Pizzeria Paradiso. Pours a clear amber with a thin off-white head. Pretty good lacing. Strange DIPA nose with some odd fruitiness abounding like strawberry candies and apple strudel. Taste is mostly massive drying bitterness with spicy alcohol at the end. Wouldn’t have placed this as a barrel aged project.

Fifteenth rating of the beer. Tap at Blue Palms. I thought this was pretty un-remarkable, but for me that sort of comes with the territory of this under-developed style. Nose is sort of sweet malt, clean water. Color is a thin lagery yellow-gold. Flavor is a more full lager with bigger esters and malt sweetness. On tap at Bistro DIPA Fest poured a clear tarnished copper with a lasting amber head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, light oak and light vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. On tap at the Hopyard. Pours a reddish clear amber gold with an off white creamy head. Looks good. The aroma is fruity and hoppy with tropical fruit, banana, pine, peach, grapefruit and caramel. The flavor is spicy and bitter with alcohol and fruit basket. Very hoppy bitter finish. I didn’t pick up any barrel notes. A: The pour is a clear golden color with some orange notes to it with a white head and some mild lacing.
S: The nose is interesting with plenty of caramel and bready malt with a bit of oak and some mild peat.
T: I was slightly surprised that the peat was much more pronounced on the tongue than in the nose. The same bready and sweet malts were there as well as the vanilla and whiskey flavors.
M: The body is medium, a bit on the full side for a lager, with moderate carbonation.
D: I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from this, but I suppose I was pleasantly surprised. Normally you don’t think of lagers and barrel aging, but this one worked fairly well.
