Bottle. Dates, sugar and molasses in the nose. Fittingly, an opaque black body. Very little head. Largely tastes as it smells. Rich, sweet and some molasses. Fairly strong hop profile does a nice job in balancing this brew. Very enjoyable. MarinEvelyn (854) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 5, 2014
Dark fruit, sweet malt aroma. Caramel, spices, some hops. Medium body, sweet, almost wine like. Dark fruit, malt. A slight slight bitter finish. Very nice Pailhead (6539) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - FEB 4, 2012

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, grapefruit, faint fruit, alcohol, and roast. It pours a dark brown with some red highlights and a small khaki head with some sporadic lacing. The flavor starts with chocolate, caramel, and faint Belgian yeast. The finish has moderate grapefruit and a touch of roast. It’s medium bodied with with mild carbonation.
Bottled. Poured clear, deep reddish-brown with a creamy, well-retained beige head.. looked very good in the glass. The aroma picked up sweet biscuit, toffee, and redder fruity notes, with another layer of fruit deeper down.. warm and well-balanced, but not too exciting. The flavor found molasses, burnt black patent, and some chocolate maltage at the core.. quite bitter around, with pine resin leading and a bit of earth tagging along.. finished fruity and bitter, with a nice kick of peppery alcohol in the end. Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. silky feel across the middle.. some of the flavors were a little muddled, but overall this was well-balanced and tasty. I’ll gladly have another. crossovert (12667) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 17, 2012
I didn’t expect too much, these black barleywines often suck, but this one is one of the better ones.

Pours a clear very dark cola color with a full lumpy light tan head. Aroma is molasses and dark dried fruit. Taste is sweet roasted malt, blackstrap molasses, slightly bitter burnt coffee beans and raisins. Very complex, but well balanced. ABV is there too, but not in your face. Super stuff! Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at The Coffee Grounds in Eau Clarie, Wisconsin. Pours an opaque bark brown colored brew with a creamy beige head that has some excellent retention and lacing. Aroma roasted dark malt, a hint of soy, light molasses, some light prunes and a touch of raisin. Taste is medium to full bodied, flavor is quite complex with flavors of dark chocolate, molasses, dark pitted fruits, and some grassy hops. Finish is mildly spicy with a lingering bitterness , semi-dry, with some dark pitted fruit aftertaste. BVery (10327) - Plymouth, Minnesota, USA - MAY 7, 2012
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2014 Tap at the Fire House in Eau Claire. Very dark pour with a small white head. Nut, molasses, and dark fruit nose and taste. Quite good! Gription79 (2887) - Bountiful, Utah, USA - JAN 13, 2013
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. There are notes of dusty cocoa, earthy, woody, prune, hints at a vinious character, slight astringency, finishes dry. Nothing special, no balance, the malts are subtle. jgb9348 (6199) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - FEB 13, 2015
Deep super dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head, about half a centimetre tall. Aroma of oak, roasted malt, raisins, figs, earth, milk chocolate, prunes, alcohol and hints of yeast. Medium-bodied; Strong malt flavours with some earth, peanuts, walnuts and a decent amount of pit fruit sweetness, highlighted with figs. Aftertaste shows a good deal of alcohol, but well tempered by the sweetness and the yeast-forward flavours with bread and earth up front as well. Overall, a nice beer that is more ’american strong’ than a barley-wine, but great to sample. This has aged well and there are no harsh flavours at all, with only a tiny bit of bread and yeast noticeable and just a smooth sweetness from pit fruits on the tail end. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Discount Liqour in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 05-September-2012 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on finally a chilly day on 12-February-2015.
