3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is an unusually ’tight ’ "black" beer compared to lusher, maltier BIPA’s. The hops kick in with a tree-bark bite, but then it gets interesting with a lasting sour bite at the back of the mouth. This beer will kind of have you sitting bolt upright in your chair and your eyes may bulge a bit, but when you pay a premium for exotic numbers like this one, it is an essential aspect of the experience.
Deep mahogany color with a moderate sized tan head. Hops abound in the aroma with some anise and licorice. Just a few hints of toasted to roasted malt. Hops jump out in the flavors as well. With grapefruit and spice. Dark malt add some bitterness and touch of ash. I find this to be a cross between a black IIPA and the moniker it has be bestowed from the brewer. 12/11

Deep super dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head, about half a centimetre tall. Aroma of oak, roasted malt, raisins, figs, earth, milk chocolate, prunes, alcohol and hints of yeast. Medium-bodied; Strong malt flavours with some earth, peanuts, walnuts and a decent amount of pit fruit sweetness, highlighted with figs. Aftertaste shows a good deal of alcohol, but well tempered by the sweetness and the yeast-forward flavours with bread and earth up front as well. Overall, a nice beer that is more ’american strong’ than a barley-wine, but great to sample. This has aged well and there are no harsh flavours at all, with only a tiny bit of bread and yeast noticeable and just a smooth sweetness from pit fruits on the tail end. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Discount Liqour in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 05-September-2012 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on finally a chilly day on 12-February-2015. csaso (2284) - Missouri, USA - JUL 25, 2014
Bottle - small tan foamy head, very deep amber/almost black color, sweet and roasty malty aroma and flavor, good size hop balance, dark fruity notes, fairly complex - pretty good overall

Pours clear, nearly black. Small wispy tan head, lasting with some decent lacing.. Aroma is sweet and sticky. Caramel, toffee, overripe red fruits, dark fruit. Flavor doesn’t quite stand out like the aroma does, s little more chocolate and roast.. Medium body. Finishes with pleasant alcohol warmth that falls just short of being boozy. Moderate piney bitterness. A little dryness. Pretty balanced. Quite smooth. I enjoyed this take on barley wines, looking forward the bourbon barrel version on deck next. Dark fruit, sweet malt aroma. Caramel, spices, some hops. Medium body, sweet, almost wine like. Dark fruit, malt. A slight slight bitter finish. Very nice

Bottle. Dates, sugar and molasses in the nose. Fittingly, an opaque black body. Very little head. Largely tastes as it smells. Rich, sweet and some molasses. Fairly strong hop profile does a nice job in balancing this brew. Very enjoyable. Gription79 (2891) - Bountiful, Utah, USA - JAN 13, 2013
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. There are notes of dusty cocoa, earthy, woody, prune, hints at a vinious character, slight astringency, finishes dry. Nothing special, no balance, the malts are subtle. esjaygee (3904) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 1, 2013
Dark black with a large creamy brown cap. Aroma of licorice, dark malts, peated malts, citrus and light molasses. Taste is sweet and malty with licorice, citrus, peat, alcohol, dark chocolate and some earthy notes. Ibrew2or3 (8614) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - SEP 6, 2012
Courtesy of markwise. Very nice, a new barleywine for me. It pours mahogany with tan-ish sort of white head of foam. The aroma offers up earthy black licorice (is earthy black licorice even possible) and sticky malty pine hop notes. The taste delivers smooth dark roasted malts, molasses and dank hoppiness moving into bitter pine hops. This is nice stuff. A big black IPA. 5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - AUG 31, 2012
Bottle: Deep cola, large frothy pale beige head, very nice lacing. Roasty hoppiness on the nose, somewhat bright. A bit of citrus peel as well. Similar on the tongue, a bit astringent. A little rough on the finish, sweet citrusy peel, a bit candyish, also some roasted malts. Body and mouthfeel are moderate. A bit of alcohol on the exit, minor, witih a little roasted astringency, hoppiness, and sweet citrus peel.   Thanks to Skyview for the bottle!
