29-Dec-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 26-Aug-10 for $4.49 at the Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad, CA) Dark Night indeed pours dark as a night in the wilderness, but sans the bright full moon on the bottle’s label. The light-brown head explodes to over two inches in height and takes many minutes to settle to a quarter inch, leaving thick rings and patches of foam on the glass in the process. The malts themselves are balanced: moderately roasty and a bit ashy with gentle bitterness, but moderately sweet as well. Flavors of dark chocolate/cacao, ashtray, licorice, blackstrap molasses, black coffee, oatmeal, earth, dark stone fruit, and apple skin. Roasty and chocolaty aroma with a fair bit of weedy leafiness and apple skin. Full bodied on the palate with slightly expansive and prickly carbonation in the mouth and a reasonably dry finish for a medium-sweet beer. Overall, a balanced, full-flavored stout with appropriate weight and solid drinkability, but the overall flavor profile doesn’t quite reach the style’s upper echelon. beersearcher (2383) - Glendale, California, USA - DEC 30, 2010
pours a jet black. aroma has a roasted quality to it but it is a mild hit. the flavors continue the roasty notes which then fades into a bit of BBQ flavor before finishing a little burnt to my taste buds. also is a bit thin. did not get into this one. Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of sweet and roasted malt combined with lighter notes of oatmeal. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of oatmeal combined with notes of roasted malt, leading to a dry roasted finish, which also has a light acidic edge from the roasted malt. Draught at 99 Bottles of Beer, Santa Cruz, CA. Perfectly black, small head. Aroma of chocolate and caramel. Mid sweet with clean rounded mouthfeel and solid body. Some chocolate, fudge and plastic. Salty finish. The flavours seem like they are wrapped in plastic and are inaccessible. KimJohansen (10498) - Frederiksberg C, DENMARK - JUL 25, 2010
Dark brown with a medium to large deep beige and creamy head. Sweet aroma with hard roasted malt, dark chocolate, hops, oats and hints of coffee. Fiinished quite dry and bitter. hoppopotamus (260) - Santa Cruz, California, USA - APR 4, 2010
Wow, really surprisingly fantastic stout. A jet black pour with a small tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, burnt toast. Flavor is nice and roasty, some more chocolate and burnt things, finishing bitter. Deliciously chewy mouthfeel. A really great stout, getting towards imperial levels. I moved to santa cruz 6 months ago, and after being bored by seabright and santa cruz mountain breweries, I am quickly becoming a santa cruz ale works fan! nimbleprop (9059) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - MAR 10, 2010
