Deep garnet with a stiff khaki head. Appealing spicy earthy/piney hop aroma with toffee and grapey undertones (Vienna malt?). Some waxy and ethanol scents. Big, clean, spicy noble hop flavor and restrained maltiness. Spruce and burnt fig at the back of the tongue. Toasted cornmeal and leather. Not the caramel bomb that most brewers think defines the style. Juicy mouthfeel, not too thick. Carbonation has just enough lift to make the ale smooth and dangerously drinkable. Slightly cloudy deep mahogany color with a small creamy tan head.
Sweet dark fruits, sweet sugar and sweet caramel malt in the aroma. Sweet it is.
Sweet dark fruits, sugar, mild hoppy bitterness and caramel malt in the flavor.
More of a hybrid between am American style and English style, not super hoppy but not super malty either.

Dark amber color thick creamy head. Aromas slight grassy hop, caramel, slight ester. Flavors esterís, light spicy wood, light alcohol mostly in the nose, spicy hop, caramel is mostly in the back of all the spicy wood/esterís. Leaves a medium astringent bitter aftertaste. I brought the bottle to the Grand Tasting at the RBSG not having tasted it before. I usually do not inflict unknown beers on my fellow beer geeks but this one snuck into my luggage so it was new to me. Luckily it was not a drain pour. Copper to amber in color with and off-white head it seems slightly oxidized but not enough to spoil the beer. Nose of caramel malts with some citrus hops. Medium in body. Mouthfeel a bit hot. Flavor sweet with the hops hanging on into the finish. Not too bad. staticGen (6) - - AUG 6, 2016 does not count
Poured into a Pilsner. The color is a deep caramel with some reddish hue. deep color - An indication of the 10% ABV to come. Foamy head, taking time to reside. An initial feeling that this will be a substantial beer.
Initial aromas indicate this is a sweet beer. As initial impressions reside, other hoppy aromas arive to indict that there is more complexity to be experienced: tropical fruit guava and passion fruit. Additional aromas linger including sweaty feet and canibus. Significant aromas offset the sweetness.
This beer has a heavy body. Itís sweetness is fairly offset with enough bitterness and mineralization/saltiness to keep the sweetness from dominating. The bitterness initially immediately overpowers the sweetness after the initial sip, but additional experience with this beer tells that there is more complexity and nuance that will linger with experience.
The label states"Barley Wine". While there is significant body and ABV, this beer does not follow in the Barley Wine tradition. Itís hopy and balanced. Itís sweet and salty. I really like this style of beer - itís carefully crafted to balance sweetness and bitterness aromas, flavors and ABV. It actually follows closely in the genre of the Avery Brewery "Holy Trinty of Ales" - high ABV beers with balance and drink-ability for their high ABV.
Itís a bargain at the price for a 22 oz bottle! Pick one up...

Looks like a flat cola. Nose of oxidation cardboard for sure with a lot of really well balanced malty notes with some toffee. I am pretty sure this is an aged bottle with a fantastic n ose
