Picked up a bottle of this because i like Santa Fe beers. $11.99 22oz. Huge head on this at first which is always a little odd for a barrel aged barleywine. First couple whiffs were plastic (uh-oh). Flavor was strong fruits and a hint of tartness. I honestly struggled with whether I thought this beer was slightly infected. The aroma as it warmed was very high alcohol like rubbing alcohol, hint of bourbon, plastic went away. Flavor was grapes, fruit, heavy alcohol, slight vanilla, slightly tart. This may or may not have been infected but its just not very good. :(

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, thick reddish brown pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of sour cherries, slight funk, hints of brown sugar, vanilla, slight bourbon, oak, but really masked by the sour notes. Taste is similar, with sour cherries, some vanilla, oak, slight funk, finishing with a hint of bourbon. Too bad. smaynard6000 (1168) - Apopka, Florida, USA - JAN 10, 2013
22oz bottle. Pours a murky dark reddish color with small tan head. Interesting aroma, bit of hoppiness and some other notes I can’t place. Bit of sourness in the flavor along with some sweet maltiness and bourbon flavor. Very nice barley wine. Travlr (24930) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - DEC 16, 2012
Draft at the source. Murky variegated golden brown colorbright tan head. Aroma of vanilla, citrus. Taste is rich, boozy, creamy vanilla and caramel. Tasty. stumpyiliz (217) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 1, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 16, 2013 After complaining to the brewery about this being the worst beer i’ve ever forced down the gullet, 5 weeks later i get some xhicken killer and a properly cellared kickin chicken; here is my re-rate;
Initial nose is bourbon followed by anise from the calavados barrels. Initial sip is overly hoppy followed by anise and old bourbon. Much better fresh than off the shelf.
Development with this in the cellar will require a constant bit of maintenance to maintain a low temp to prevent any kind of infection.
Last one i had was sour crap shit acid beer. This one- 95% better.
Cheers brian lock for taking care of me!!

Bottle at a recent bottle share... Poured dark, amber-brown with a nice white head. This hit the spot. A nice BA Barleywine. Dark charred grains and wood with whiskey notes and smooth sweetness similar to vanilla and toffee. Rosebud butternuts (2396) - Denton, Texas, USA - OCT 26, 2012
bottle thanks to bu11zeye. poured hazy amber with a white head and some lace. aroma was cedar, bourbon, caramel, dark fruits, and brown sugar. flavor was much the same, but minus the cedar. body was slick with low carbonation. crosamich (433) - Twin Falls, Idaho, USA - SEP 8, 2012
very much lacking its malty character. soapy barrel note. watered-down body but the bourbon portion makes up just a bit. alexsdad06 (10436) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - JUN 9, 2012
