A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Companys master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself; and it packs a punch, so much so that its drinkability rapidly gives way to a euphoric intoxication that only a true Porter drinker can understand. Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Crystal, 70-80 l. Crystal, Chocolate. Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Willamette.

Bottle poured a deep dark brown hue w/ big tan slowly diminishing creamy head leaving a nice cap w/ good lacing. Mild malty aroma. Initial flavor is a very light sweet with a subtle bitter finish of short duration. Taste is predominately the roast, which Id describe as a medium roast, there isnt a burnt French roast to the beer which to me is nice. Subtle coffee and chocolate notes. This is a solid straight forward porter. Medium bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation, and light alcohol in the finish.

Can: Pours almost black with a chunky tan head. Chocolate, coffee, vanilla aroma. Taste is rich, dark chocolate malt, overcooked coffee, cream. A really solid, sweet porter that finishes with a nice roasty bittering.

Bottle. Deep brown body with a frothy, beige head, mostly lasting. Aroma of roasted grain, chocolate, vanilla, light floral hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Taste of toasted grain, coffee and cocoa with light roast and hop bitterness carrying through the finish. Good porter.
