On tap at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a smattering of fizzy tan foam. aroma is hard to figure out while cold, but releases some dark fruits, pumpernickel, and leather as it warms. Flavor has a solid flandersy acetic tartness, bready leathery malt, a pervasive but mild anise note, slight coffee/chocolate roast, vanilla, oak, pepper.
On tap at brewery. Black with a thin creamy white head. Chocolate, roasted grain, cherry, and tart fruit aroma. Nice creamy palate. Tastes of chocolate, citrus, roasted grain, green apple, and vanilla with a big tart roasted grain finish. Excellent. birdmachine (226) - Oakland, California, USA - FEB 22, 2013
UPDATED: NOV 14, 2014 Poured into a sample (5 oz) snifter at the brewery in Capitola. Pours deep dark brown, almost black, with some light coming through. Almost no head, with some bubbles escaping to the sides of the glass. Aroma is acidic, with some interesting biscuit, leathery notes. I think the temperature is masking a bit of the more subtle fruit smell coming through. First sip is tart, balanced by a healthy malt base. Really dry and crisp - almost impossible to taste the 10% ABV. Some dark fruits, like figs, raisins and some tobacco/leather flavors on the finish. Vanilla and some oak dominate the palate as it sits in the mouth. As it warms up some more roast flavors are coming through. Wow. Such an amazing sour/wild ale. This brewery is really blowing me away
