Scipio (1044) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - MAY 25, 2017
Pours a deep brown with a medium, light tan head. There isnít much of an aroma in here. There are faint roasted malt and maybe smoke, but that is about all. The taste is on the dry side and is a bit sweet. More is going on here than there was in the nose. Toasted malts, nuts, light licorice and smoke, and just a bit of chocolate. The smoky currents come through most in the aftertaste, although that isnít all that potent. Light in body thinner in texture, and average in carbonation. The Sapporo Japanese release of this style was better than this.

Dark brown with brown head. Light roasted grain aroma. Toasty notes of low alcohol. A brew this dark should have some warmth. It doesnít. Not bad, but rather mediocre. I expected a lot from this. It didnít impress. Can.

Kleg (229) - The Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 7, 2017
22 oz can. Black pour with ruby highlights and a beige head with decent retention. No lacing. Low carbonation. Light body. Muted roast lager flavor. Smooth and easy drinking. The flavor is simple and short-lived. Decent.

Aroma and flavor is mild/medium roasted/dark malts, grainy in the middle, a hint of fruit and a mix of relatively light acidity and beery in the finish.

22 oz can into a 16 oz. paneled mug. Black - NOT dark brown with a short lasting beige head. Aroma of Roasted Barley - NOT toasted malt. Slightly bitter taste from the dark malt i.e. black patent that was used with more roasted barley. Thin body with a slightly dry finish. Goes well with Chinese cuisine.

Can at Akashi in Katy. Almost black pour with a sizable beige head. Aroma of cocoa and toasted malt. Tastes lightly bitter and roasty. Light-medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Canned from Bottle Bin. Havenít seen this beer in almost twenty years. Wanted to try it again for quite a while. Probably not as good as it seemed back then. Roasty up front with a little hint of sweetness. Fairly thin on the palate. Some good roasted coffee notes and a little bit of black licorice. Some burnt grains as well. Fairly decent roasty finish. Not too bad, but gets a little cloying. Roast is good though.

Sample can for review: The pour itself is more of a porter brown than black. In the glass, it looks dark brown to black, but with brown highlights. The smell has a bit of light coffee roast to it, and a sweetness like toffee; hey, that rhymes. The taste starts with pinprickly carbonation. The roast has coffee notes and is a bit grainy, but is rather light to make up for it. Iíve always considered Sapporoís main lager to be dry, bu this has a residual sweetness that leaves a light coating on the lips, with a suggestion of a dark bock beer. Hop bill seems titlted toward German and milder bittering hops, resulting in a notable bitterness that works with the sweet malt.

Bill Becker (1010) - Casper, Wyoming, USA - NOV 25, 2016
Brewed in Canada. 650 ml can. A very dark brown..reddish highlights pour. Nice head of tannish foam. Smells of roasted malt, grain and some hops? Light roasted malt flavour, dark chocolate, which I would suggest brings the bitter notes to the table. There are some sweet chocolate/caramel tastes as well. Decent body with adequate carbonation. Not bad.
