UPDATED: MAR 30, 2004 A decent Schwarzbier. However, there was little to make this standout. Slight chocolate and coffee tastes. Cool steel can!

Clear near black liquid with a head that id fizzy and tan. Dry dark malt and tar flavors. A bit thin in feel, a bit to fizzy perhaps. Just a dark lager at best.

Weak andf watery, I bought this one just out of curiousity to see if Japan had learned to make a decent dark beer... they haven't.

Darker liquid with a fizzy head. Somewhat malty and tart. Watery and thin. A odd little combination of beer aspects. Doesn't work.

Had this on tap. Maybe different than the Sapporo Black listed as mine was called Sapporo Dark. Decent beer with a slightly sourish taste to it. Quite bubbly. Decent but nothing to brag about.

Swilled 250 ml of this in the airport in Tokyo as a way of using up my yen 5 mins before i jumped on the plane. Surprisingly tasty. Mildly roasty, with marmaladey aroma. Dark red. Smooth and mallty with a bit of chocolate, and a dry finish.

This is the worst (unspoiled) beer I’ve ever encountered. It tastes like a non-alcoholic caramel drink (and even if it was called that instead of beer, it’d STILL be bad). It pours like thin diner coffee and sports a weak, quickly-disappearing head. Smells sickly sweet, thin and tinny, like watery molasses. I once tried ’waterchestnut drink’ in Singapore, which qualifies as worse, but it wasn’t trying to be beer. Horrible.

A good full-flavored dark beer. Excellent with Japanese noodles. Good luck finding it.

This one had my ratings all over the map. Opaque appearance, with a weak, slightly fizzy brown head. Somewhat carbonated taste as well. Aroma is a bit off, though a strong burnt flavor coming through. Not as complex as your usual Schwarzbier (or Stout) but quite enjoyable if you can get by its weak points.

Black. Somewhat sweetish with burnt flavours. Rather bitter.
