3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2011 Bottle. Poured very dark muddy brown with a small (less than 1 finger) light brown foamy head that was fully diminishing and had poor lacing.
The aroma was that of a roasted bread malt, a mild resin hop and a mild sweet yeast with notes of coffee, chocolate, molasses and a hint of dark fruit.
The taste was malty and mildly sweet with a note of chocolate in the beginning then became slightly bitter with a note of dark roasted coffee and a touch of dark fruit at the end. The flavor was left to linger an average duration on the taste buds.
Mouthfeel was just a tad beyond medium in body and rather creamy in texture with a flat carbonation.
Overall a smooth easy to drink brew that was quite flavorful and left and very satisfying aftertaste that lingered on the taste buds, but not for to long.
Bottle at home. Pours clear dark brown, brown head, not persistent. Sweet roasted malts, passito wine, caramel, nuts, raisin. Simple sweet light roasted malts, brown sugar. Shot (540) - Westerville, Ohio, USA - JUL 25, 2017
Bottle. Pours a ruby brown with a massive off-white head that dissipates to a clumpy film. Some lacing on the glass. Muted aromas of gingerbread, dark fruit and a bit of toffee. Upfront flavors of German yeast, plum, cocoa, citrus, cola and bready tones. Mildly hoppy with a long, malty finish. Medium carbonation. Lively mouthfeel with a slight oiliness that coats the tongue. As a craft beer, this isn’t much of a standout, but as a traditional German schwarzbier, this is pretty good. RedSox2004 (1909) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - DEC 29, 2016
Beer of the month club. Deep dark brown with mahogany highlights, two-finger tan head and nice lace. Aromas of toast, caramel, ash and faint citrus. Taste is similar, as roasted malts up front are supported by solid caramel base and highlighted by a dry bitterness. Medium body, lively carbonation, prickly mouthfeel and a very dry finish. Canned from 99 Cent Only. Sweet up front with a mild roasty flavor to it. Some black licorice with a little bit of hop flavor in the finish. Pretty good and clean. Somewhat mild, but a good old school gateway beer.

Bottle; pours cola brown with a tan head; has a chocolate aroma with some dark fruits and roasted malt; taste is chocolate and dark fruits; finish is sweet; probably would be better but it is a bit watery Iznogud (3895) - CROATIA - MAR 18, 2016
Bottle, 355 ml from Pivoteka, Zagreb. shared with JFK10000. Pours brown with medium beige head. Roasted malts, caramel. breadish notes, sweetish. Light and bit bland. S_Side_Smitty (775) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - MAR 3, 2016
Pours cola brown with a medium light tan head. Aroma is caramel, deep malts and something slightly buscuity. Taste is not that heavy with some caramel sweetness and some easy pilsener bitterness. The malts kinda round it all out. Easy to drink schwarzbier, but not super complex. deving17 (8) - - JAN 2, 2016 does not count
