If you are an unabashed lover of carmel, you may find few better beers. Otherwise, this beer could be conceived as caramelly sweet and cloying. Rich ruby, syrupy bodied, appearing black when less light, it had a too thick rootbeer float head which broke into unappealing chunky iceberg islands. The aroma was of a toffee caramel and the flavor of carame/butterscotch candy. One dimensionally caramel and also evokes rememberance of an unfortunate New Year's eve caramel liquor experience. Not particularly well crafted, this is a novelty that will appeal to some. Steak (124) - New York, USA - DEC 15, 2002
Unlike most of the others who have rated this, I couldn't really get much caramel aroma or flavoring out of it. The body was very thin, and there wasn't much to the finish. The beer tried to focus on the caramel-ness, and didn't try to do anything else. Not a total disrespect, but not good either. stephen (308) - California, USA - DEC 11, 2002
Pretty caramelly and more of a synthetic caramel flavor than real caramel flavor. Like KRaft Caramel. Drank at room temp and tastes a lot like cola. Thin and drinkable. Dark mahogany and leaves nice lace. Kind of gross after a few sips. Not for me. dankfor20 (196) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - DEC 5, 2002
What a porter the carmel definately shows through but not in an overpowering way. They need to make these for more than just the christmas sampler LordNeuf (136) - Acton, Massachusetts, USA - DEC 5, 2002
Beautiful dark red. Lovely taste of candy like caramel. A wonderful earthy, nutty finish. A great beer and something I will have again.

Beautiful on the pour -- brown red body with a lasting tan head. Aroma is caramel -- not standard beer caramel aroma, more like sweet candy caramel. Flavor is intensely sweet caramel, with the wee bit of earthy hoppy bitterness at the swallow insufficient to lend any hint of balance. estoppel (1028) - Buffalo, New York, USA - NOV 30, 2002
UPDATED: DEC 3, 2004 Transparent brown, pretty good tan head, vinegar in the nose with hints of caramel. Yes, it tastes like caramel, but with a metallic tinge. Bitterness in the finish is the only hint of hops. I didn’t find it to be all that sweet. The nose got metallic after a few sips. Okay idea, but not very well executed. RERATE 12/04: A year later, I liked this a lot better. Less artificial, metallic notes are gone. Maybe I had a bad bottle last year. Rockinout (966) - Kent, Ohio, USA - NOV 26, 2002
Sweet butterscotch nose, very strong. Caramel taste is artificial......... DaSilky1 (2608) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 21, 2002

there's no justification on giving this a bad rating just because its unique..its damn tasty and a finely made beer...
Carmel onslaught...I actually expected sweeter though from reading all the ratings..THere's actually a good beer under that carmel..I can taste it..The ending needs a little work though..
Bottle- In my opinion this is one of Saranac's best beers. Nice sweet, complex flavor. Looks good and tastes good.
