COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saranac Caramel Porter is a robust, flavorful porter reminiscent of a by-gone era. True to brewing tradition, we've used dark caramel malt as well as Fuggles & East Kent Goldings hops for a smooth, yet slightly bitter, roasted flavor. Look for hints of real caramel used in brewing this delicious brew. Enjoy.

Dark red color. Smells kind of like a sweet caramel beer, and I can taste a coffee/butterscotch flavor, really over the top though.

Bottle thanks to Ken! Poured clear, medium garnet-tinted caramel with a short cap of tan head that stuck around for a short while. The aroma was very sweet with caramel above all else.. vanilla was secondary, and there was a little chocolate deeper down.. not very complex, but I likes my caramel. The flavor was also caramel-driven, with a creamy sweetness that made this tough to drink after a couple ounces.. vanilla, cream, and sweeter chocolates join the caramel on the candied finish. Medium-bodied and creamy on the palate, but too sweet to truly enjoy.. a little sharp on the finish. This was OK.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev at the (last!) Saranac Vs. Samuel Adams sampler packs tasting. Pours a clear dark ruby with a small off-white head. Aroma is predominently caramel along with some malt and UK hops. Smells o.k. if not a little artificial. Flavour follows the aroma but really suffers from the artificial caramel taste, its too sweet. Its too thin and weak to support that much caramel. A poor Porter and another miss for Saranac tonight.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, butterscotch and subtle chocolate. Malty flavor with sweet caramel and a bit of chocolate before a semi-bitter roasty finish.

Forte carbonisation. Arrire got de beurre. (Rating #90)

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2007 The description of this beer really revs up the taste buds. I got this one in their holiday pack. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle the brew pours a very dark brown color with a small tan head. There is a marvelous aroma of caramel and butterscotch. The flavor is bitter with noted undertones of caramel and butterscotch. A bit of caramel and malt linger on the aftertaste but overall the beer is dominated by bitterness. It is a bit thin and watery on the texture. I think if it were a bit sweeter and less bitter this could be a fantastic beer.

Pours a transparent dark amber mahogany with ruby hues and a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma seems pretty metallic with a touch of diacetyl and some sweet dark caramel malt. Body starts about average with lots of carbonation and some earthy metallic notes with light toasty caramel sweetness and a touch of bittering hops with help to dry out the finish. Seems like it would be a good concept for a beer were it not for the metallic character.

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Pours a clean medium brown with reddish highlights topped by a small frothy tan head and some lace. The aroma is heavy caramel, butterscotch and brown sugar along with a very faint vapour of aromatic hops and apple esters. The taste is much like the nose with overtly strong sweet malt character along with major diacetyl tones. A bit nutty and toasty but any bitterness is covered up by the full frontal sweetness. I like Fuggles and EKG hops but they are nowhere to be front sadly. The mouth feel is lively and thin. Ugh, I will pass...

Pailhead (6525) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - DEC 14, 2004
Bottle: No mistake about that aroma, definitely all caramel and nothing else. Pours a dark reddish-brown with slight transparency when held to the light. Decent off-white head that diminishes quickly. Flavor is all caramel with a little butteriness and extremely light hops in the finish. I like this, but I dont think I could drink a lot of it without getting sick of it. Something that would be enjoyable every now and then. The rating for this beer really comes down to how much you like caramel.

UPDATED: DEC 13, 2005 I tried the Saranac Winter 12 pack and was extremely disappointed. All of the lighter beers had a disgusting bitter taste and in the dark beers it wasnt as evident but it still tasted exactly the same. Isnt this supposed to be a variety pack, not just the same beer with food coloring and a different label. The only one that tasted different was the caramel porter because it had traces of caramel. Shame on you saranac for charging $20 for this garbage
