Saranac Caramel Porter is a robust, flavorful porter reminiscent of a by-gone era. True to brewing tradition, we've used dark caramel malt as well as Fuggles & East Kent Goldings hops for a smooth, yet slightly bitter, roasted flavor. Look for hints of real caramel used in brewing this delicious brew. Enjoy.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, butterscotch and subtle chocolate. Malty flavor with sweet caramel and a bit of chocolate before a semi-bitter roasty finish.

Call me a a sucker - but I was done in by the caramel aroma. Flavor did not disapoint either. Nice deep, dark appearance, thinly dissipating with a little lacing head. Overall, not bad - but too sweet for a porter. Strong finish - overall a good effort by Saranac.

Forte carbonisation. Arrière goût de beurre. (Rating #90)

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2007 The description of this beer really revs up the taste buds. I got this one in their holiday pack. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle the brew pours a very dark brown color with a small tan head. There is a marvelous aroma of caramel and butterscotch. The flavor is bitter with noted undertones of caramel and butterscotch. A bit of caramel and malt linger on the aftertaste but overall the beer is dominated by bitterness. It is a bit thin and watery on the texture. I think if it were a bit sweeter and less bitter this could be a fantastic beer.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev at the (last!) ’Saranac Vs. Samuel Adams sampler packs tasting’. Pours a clear dark ruby with a small off-white head. Aroma is predominently caramel along with some malt and UK hops. Smells o.k. if not a little artificial. Flavour follows the aroma but really suffers from the artificial caramel taste, it’s too sweet. It’s too thin and weak to support that much caramel. A poor Porter and another miss for Saranac tonight.

Bottle thanks to Ken! Poured clear, medium garnet-tinted caramel with a short cap of tan head that stuck around for a short while. The aroma was very sweet with caramel above all else.. vanilla was secondary, and there was a little chocolate deeper down.. not very complex, but I likes my caramel. The flavor was also caramel-driven, with a creamy sweetness that made this tough to drink after a couple ounces.. vanilla, cream, and sweeter chocolates join the caramel on the candied finish. Medium-bodied and creamy on the palate, but too sweet to truly enjoy.. a little sharp on the finish. This was OK.

Pours a transparent dark amber mahogany with ruby hues and a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma seems pretty metallic with a touch of diacetyl and some sweet dark caramel malt. Body starts about average with lots of carbonation and some earthy metallic notes with light toasty caramel sweetness and a touch of bittering hops with help to dry out the finish. Seems like it would be a good concept for a beer were it not for the metallic character.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev. Clear ruby-copper with no head. Sweet, thin aroma of caramel and butterscotch - and MORE caramel, quite artificial - I don’t really smell hops, malt or anything else. Tastes the same, but the fake caramel adds an unpleasant chemical tang ... it is fairly roasty, I guess. Mouthfeel is watery, syrupy and flat - I liked this not at all, too thin and fake.

Strong sweet caramel and some nuttiness in aroma. The flavor is similar to the aroma with a strong sweetness. Not horrible, not really that great either.

Bottle: Dark crimson with a firm 1/4 inch head. Real sugary aroma, like caramel candy corns from Halloween. Similar essence in the flavors ... good thing I skipped trick or treating this year. This is definitely for the sweet tooths.
