Poured into a Duvel glass, this brew pours pitch black with about a half an inch of dark tan head.
Smell is mostly roasted malt and sweetened coffee blended with alcohol as it warms.
The dark roasted coffee flavor is dominant with a pleasant alcohol heat on the finish which is masked very well. There is also a hint of chocolate that comes through as it warms
A admirable offering by Saranac. I never really found their brews to be anything spectacular, but this is really a fine brew with is definitely worth the try. You can’t beet it for the value as well.
Bottle. Opaque Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty/burnt malts, lots of espresso coffee, liquorice, some chocolate. Hoppy; spicy herbal hops; lots of hops. Rather oily. Quite salty. Roast coffee malty with sour/bitter hop edge. Long bitter finish. Very drinkable. (2010-12)

It pours very thick and slowly into the glass. Its color is dark black with dark brown high lights near the edges of the glass. You could say that it has the appearance of used motor oil. The head is tan in color, thick and foamy. It has good retention and leaves behind light tan rings of lace. The aroma is full of dark roasted malts with a light herbal hops note off in the distance. The flavor has a deep roasted malt character with notes of dark toast, espresso, burnt caramel and baker’s chocolate. Hop flavors blend in well under the deep malty character of this stout and add a solid dose of bitterness. It is very thick, creamy and slick in texture with a full body and soft carbonation. This is defiantly a heavy hitter with good depth from the FX Matt Breweries Saranac line. The 9% abv. is well hidden and the silky smooth texture makes it an easy sipping full bodied beer.

A: pour a dark soily black ale with no head formation and a mirror surface. No lace.
S: prunes and malts. Faint, but pleasant.
T: Bitter and oxidized malts are not very pleasant. Have a burnt coffee flavor and small hints of licorice and honey.
M: Medium bodied (a bit low for the style) and moderate carb. Dry finish.
O: A little too burnt in profile for me. May have potential to develop over time, but not enough to justify the investment.

Bottled. Pours dark brown in color with a creamy tan head. Roasted notes of coffee, some darker chocolate and light burnt notes in aroma. Taste is filled with coffee, licorice and slightly burnt chocolate. Even some sweeter notes as in raisins and brown sugar towards the finish.

Pours a thick, dark-as-night black color with a thin medium-brown head. Aroma is light and malty. Pumpernickel. Flavor is dryyyy. Black coffee notes with a bit of dry hops in the background. Not bad, but not the best Imperial Stout I’ve had.
