Nov. 4, 2012: 12 oz. bottle fr. Saranac "12 Beers of Winter" sampler pack. Reddish (surprise!) color. Aggressive, bordering on harsh (a Saranac trait), hop profile; nicely balanced with caramel malt sweetness. Dry, bitter finish. Better than the breweryís "regular" IPA, but falls short of the better West Coast IPAs it seeks to emulate.

A: Pours a dark copper color: Iíd reckon closer to amber than red. The head is a little over one finger high, with a pale orange shade. Despite its slight rockiness, it features both good creaminess and retention. A goodly amount of lacing is left on the glass.
S: I really get a defined toastedness from the malts. They also seem to be lacking some of the sweeter elements (like caramel). Iím not picking up too much of the hops - some piny notes are there, but on the plus side, theyíre very well integrated within the malt backbone. After a while, it becomes faintly fruity. Iím sort of impressed, this is a very solid aroma, especially for Saranac.
T: At first, itís front loaded with a lot of herbaceous, piny bitterness. Right after the bitterness hits, I get a light (but VERY welcome) twinge of melon. Malts build up ever-so-slightly on the finish, but I still the back end is a little gutted in terms of flavor.
M: I like my red IPAs to be crisp and clean...and guess what? This is crisp and clean. Itís almost bone-dry, but not quite. A touch of malt sweetness gives it a bit of body, so itís not a straight-up chugger. Still, this is easy to down thanks in part to zesty carbonation.
O: Not amazing, but definitely solid enough. Iíd even go so far as to say this is the best of the bunch. When it comes down to it, getting six different beers in this 12 pack - all hanging around the average area, with only a small deviation (good or bad) between them - for a cheap price is a pretty good deal, especially considering that all of them were pretty damn drinkable. Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - Abercorn - 12 oz bottle. Pours a very dark copper with a slight off-white head, no lacing. Aroma has a malty wort-like essence, some molasses sweetness. Flavor is pretty malt-oriented for an IPA with some caramel sweetness, a touch of date-like fruitiness, a brief whisper of citrus bitterness. Decently thick mouthfeel. Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
Appearance: The pour produced a tall light tan head over an amber colored body with great clarity and some nice visible carbonation.
Smell: There are nice juicy citrus hops and sweet malty notes jumping right out of the glass.
Taste / Palate: Mild hop notes and sweet bready maltiness mix up front with hop flavor and bitterness building up on the back end. Itís middle has just a touch of caramel and toffee sweetness. This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice red complexion with a decent looking one finger-ed white foamy head that ends up dieing into the beer within about thirty seconds and left a decent amount of messy lacing.
The aroma smelled like a good cross between an AIPA and a Red Ale as there was just enough bitter piney hops and still had a nice sweet caramel maltiness combining nicely.
The taste was mainly sweet but did allow some nice bitter hops coming in to balance it for the most part. There was no aftertaste but it did have a dry finish.
On the palate, it sat about a light to medium in body, and showed some light sessionable qualities about it. The carbonation was decent for an IPA or a Red Ale as it was somewhat sharp at times but still wasnít overbearing.
Overall, this was a good example of a cross between an AIPA and a Red Ale. Iíd have this again if available.

It pours a slightly hazy reddish gold with a very large head of foam that surprised me considering it came straight from the fridge.
I get light notes of citrus hops and grain.
Though hoppy, itís more of a bitter flavour going on than an actual citrus thingy; the malt tastes toasted and grainy. The 63 IBUs donít seem to working any magic. A pretty dull brew.
Medium bodied so mouthfeel.

A reddish amber body with an off white head that had decent retention and nice lace. Aroma had a caramel malt base upfront and a nice blend of hops. Some citrus, floral and pine hops, but there was a mild sense of tropical fruits. Flavor was mildly sweet. The hops seemed to be restrained and seemed to have more of a grapefruit profile than anything else. Pine and floral qualities were too restrained. Light on the palate. Bottle purchased in Ellicottville, NY. Pours an attractive amber red. Some lacing. Mild hoppy aroma. Bitterness on the tongue. Nice long semi-bitter finish. Nice hybrid and well done. I like this brewery.
