Tap at C’est What. Deep amber pour. The aroma has a soft smooth vanilla note. Caramel and a bit of earthiness as well. Flavour is well-hopped but sort of grassy. There is also a touch of smoke that is actually a little bit distracting (not sure where it might be from). The grassy edge is also a little bit distracting. As it warms the aroma actually fades and becomes less distinct. A bit of a miss for me. Strange stuff. Well-hopped but still lacking complexity.
May 7, 2013 - at C’Est What on draught. Slightly hazy reddish-copper, amber around the edges, with a small diminishing creamy/frothy off-white head. Smells like a wood BW - sweet malt, definite alcohol, floral bitterness and juicy blood orange elements - very nice balance with not much wood/booze character. Taste is very light, incredibly floral, the fresh citrus juiciness is way in the background - while there is floral bitterness and alcohol, it’s mostly incredibly sweet, almost koolaid sweet (7-). Average body, very sticky and lightly carbonated - finish is medium length with sweetened fruit drink and floral bitterness and a little dry wood in the aftertaste - my palate said "English" rather than "American" mabel (9245) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 10, 2014
[5352-20130507] Tap. Mild grainy aroma. Clear, amber red body with a quick foamy white head. Boozy barrel heavy grains flavour has a lighter quick finish. Medium boozy body. Great balance, nice cohesion. (7/3/7/4/14) 3.5

On tap at the Only Cafe. Pours a clear burnt orange with good-sized off-white head that has lots of retention. Aroma is sweet candy sugar, tropical fruit and dark fruit. Flavour is quite sweet with candied sugar, tropical fuits, raisin/plum and some gentle woodiness. Alcohol is quite subtle - no burn. Silky mouthfeel. Fine but reasonably active carbonation. A reddish copper (Bourbon barrel aged bw) with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet vinous malt with bourbin notes, treacle and light oxidation. In mouth, a sweet vinous malt with light fruity notes, grassy hops, light licorice, and loads of alcohol warmth, bourbon notes, very nice but rather Belgian.

Cask at Sawdust City Tap Takeover, C’est What. Pours a slightly hazy amber-gold with no head. Aroma of caramel malt, a hint of smoke, some fruit and light hops. Malty flavour with notes of maple syrup, fruit, light spices and light hops. Syrupy mouthfeel. Average bodied. Modest Aroma, sweet modest malt, light alcohol. Flavour is similar, very smooth enjoyable malt character. Modest warming alcohol. Sweet caramel accents, whispers if biscuity malt. Dry malty finish. Very smooth average plus bodied palate, average to low carbonation. Simple, but surprisingly subtle for a barleywine and dangerously drinkable. C’est What Sawdust City tap over. Malty aroma. Light orange coloured body. A nicely drinkable barleywine, true to the style.
