Do you always dive right into the deep end or do you wade in slowly? Do you rush in or do you stop to think about it before you decide? Well sometimes it’s nice to take your time. There’s no need to rush, take it slow, ease in and get it right. And that’s exactly what we did with our Gateway Kolsch; we took the time to get it right. Paying homage to the lagered ales of Koln Germany, this Kolsch style ale is aged a little longer, letting all the flavours mellow, making it one easy beer to drink. Brilliant yellow and clear as a summer’s day, this golden ale is for all of you out there who like to sit back relax and take the time to get it right.

can from late january - so a month and a half old - that pours clear pale but bright fluorescent with a very nice white head, reviving and offering some retention and lacing. fresh almost pillowy pilsner-like matiness - shockingly no pils, rather canadian barley mostly; pear-like malt fruitiness, never perfumey tho, spalty spicy herbalness, particularly clean and slightly fruity yeast action - definitely some lagering action, white pepper, minerals. moderate carbonation, light body - oily; smooth and balanced grassy-spicy-herbal finish. good kolsch.

Despite having lived in the region of Cologne kolsch is not one of my favourite styles (in their regional rivalry with Dusseldorf the later wins the better beer category easily with their altbier). However, any style can be done well or poorly and their some kolsch houses I have tried in Cologne that are quite good. Likewise I think this is a quite well done version of kolsch. There is a nice smooth grain maltiness in the body. Moee of an easy drinking beer than one with a lot of subtleties but that is what a good kolsch is. Probably would not buy it regularly but am able to enjoy it which is a pretty good achievement for any kolsch with me.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2017 This kolsch poured a slightly cloudy, light yellow colour with a bright white, spore like head with medium lacing. Scents include cream, corn, club soda and dough. First swig was sharp flavored with medium / high carbonation. Flavours of corn, honey and basement. Finish is lightly hoppy with honey corn lingering.

On tap at The Arrow & Loon. Arrived with not much head and has a pale golden appearance. Tarty and fruity flavours, oranges, hints of lime. Has mild hints of grapefruit. Aromas are pretty much same as flavours, mainly sourness and fruitiness. Sour tart mouthfeel. Average carbonation.

Rated based on what Kolsch should be. For a light-coloured beer, wonderful sweet orange-grass aroma. Off-gold hazy appearance. Sure not heavy hoppy but tasty malt-clean lager mix. Really creamy feel. Would have again. Recommend.

Super easy-drinking beer and one of the more popular brews at my local. A hit with the crowd looking to transition to craft beer.

A bit of sulfur, sweet Apple aroma! Sweet Apple taste, some hot dryness, elemental but great.

Pours clear straw yellow with a white head. Aroma and flavours are grass, grain, bread and carmel malts. Clean and crisp tasting.

Pours clear, pale, a touch flat - a bit weak to the eye. Malty and slightly musty to the nose - bread, toffee, grain, not bad. Taste is easy to drink but forgettable, similar to a Euro pilsner. Grain, sweet malt, noticeable German malt character. Pretty straightforward but it does the job.
