Tap at the t’Arends Nest, Amsterdam. Creamy and tasty extra stout, with hints of dark berries, chocolate and coffee. Very Good.
Bottle. Pitch black pour. Roast malty (coffee, chocolate, caramel, hint of liquorice). Bit spicy. Smooth and creamy. Sweet leading to a slightly bitter drying finish. Very drinkable. Alcohol well masked. Nice full flavoured stout. (2008)

0.33 l bottle as ’De Schans Stout’ from the brewery shop, 6.5% abv. Minimally gushing (again). Clear, very dark red to black with a huge, foamy, slowly diminishing, brown head. Roasty, malty aroma of dark chocolate and coffee beans with hints of dark, ripe fruits. Sweetish, fruity-malty taste of dark cherries, prunes, dark chocolate and burnt nuts, followed by a lingering, roasty, medium bitter finish with lots of coffee. Medium body, creamy and highly effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Quite tasty, but again there’s way too much carbonation in a beer of this brewery, with the foam rising out of the bottle and the beer heavily foaming in my mouth. schenkt zwart licht stroperig met behoorlijke bruine schuimige kraag en te veel koolzuur.
Bottle at a big tasting (Nördprovning 2015). It was a bottle from 2007 and the sticker didn’t look like the picture. It said Extra Stout on the frame. Fruity smell with dried fruit, raisins in particular. Similar taste. Aged with lots of raisins and other dried fruits. Very nice! DutchDrebus (6074) - Oirschot, NETHERLANDS - MAR 15, 2015
Tap @ Van Moll. Pitch black espresso colour with a small white head. Smells coffee, roasty, slightly salty. Tastes roasty, iron, hint of salty liquorice. Medium body, too much carbo for a stout.

0,33l fles uitgeschonken donker roodbruin met een cremeschuimkrag. Geur is likeur en toffe met cacao. Mondgevoel is erg droog van de gist met in de smaak tonen van noten en cacao met ook een zoetje van caramel. Nice Martinus (4685) - Baarle-Nassau, NETHERLANDS - MAY 11, 2014
Reddish black colour, firm beige head. Rather subdued, malty aroma, roast, cacao, red fruits. Malty flavrou, light hops, chocolate and loads of coffee. Finish coffee, malts, caramel, perfume and ash. Really nice!

"Original recipe of 1949 from Van Vollenhoven Brewery in Amsterdam. Brewed by De Schans with special permission from Heineken. The label on the bottle is a replica of the original label. Refermented in the bottle. "
When I was in the Pilsener Club, Amsterdam, Monday 17th March, the bottle I was given was labelled Schans Stout, 6.5%. The barman told me Schans were no longer able to call it Van Vollenhovens. It tasted the same as the V V labelled bottle I remember on my last visit. I presume that Heineken have withdrawn their permission for Schans to use the name? anders37 (26824) - Malmö, SWEDEN - JAN 13, 2014
