This is bloody fantastic. Intense, dense and powerful. Toffee, coriander, caramel, and blackcurrant flavours, with a rasping yeast taste cutting through at the finish. Surprisingly subtle for a 10% beer. Rerate (2002): not quite as mindblowing as the 1st couple of times I had it, but still quality stuff.

UPDATED: JUL 14, 2003 RerateThis is very very good! Looks are the same as last time. Aroma is strong of sweet caramel, chocolatmilk maybe, bit spicy and malty. Taste is sweet and malty, complex but balanced. Long lingering palate. HMM, delicious! Original ratingCloudy caramel-brown color, small but longlasting head. Aroma is malty, but not roasted, a bit spicy more, though not very strong. Very nice spicy malty taste, but a bit thin maybe. A beer to age i guess, and the one i had was very 'young'. Overall taste is very good and complex, but it lacks some body.

Fine light brown head, initially with large bubbles. Dark red brown body. Sweet aroma with fruit, chocolate, vanilla. Taste is balanced and complex; sweet, chocolate, caramel, not much bitterness, a little spice. Medium to full, soft. Easy to drink - yummy.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2006 Great look, dark beer with a lasting head. Great strong, sweet smell. Taste is massive, sweet, chocolate, burned malts and a little iron-like in the finish. Very very good beer.

rauchbier (3900) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - NOV 30, 2003
Bottle conditioned. Deep chestnut, good lasting white head and moderate condition. Chunky aromas of malt reminiscent of a barley wine, plenty of yeastiness and a peaty smokiness like a good single malt whisky. Fullbodied thick mouthfulls of malt laced with roast barley and a woody vinous note. Long malty finish with a subtle dry roastiness to stop it becoming rampantly sweet. Didnt really get any corriander notes but am not complaining. If someone told me the name meant "brewed by fallen trappists" I would believe them.

(Bottle 33 cl) Suppose chestnut coloured is the closest you come to describing this. Chestnut with an orange glow and a small, beige head. Hazy with a bottle sediment. Vinous aroma with notes of almonds and raisins. Very complex taste with notes of dried fruits - raisins in particular. It also has touches of delicate desert wine and marzipan. Incredibly lovely - this really is my kinda beer. 230805

Bottle at the Mug in Middelburg. A strong dark beer with a caramel and coriander aftertaste. a classic

$5 33cl bottle from Takanaya in Tokyo. Pours thick murky brown with a simultaneous fine bubble brown head as if the bottle were half filled with yeast, but with no sediment at the bottom of the bottle. The smell is a unique and wonderful blend of buttery molasses and a little yeasty maltiness. I want to pour this over pancakes. The head forms a thin cloudy veil over that doesnt fade. The taste is mild, not sweet, but not dry either. Still murky at the bottom of my glass and now I can see some small floaters. Very good beer. Use before 06/2009.
