COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

starts with minimal, nearly undetectable flavor, followed by a strange unpleasant bitterness. not hoppy, just an artificial seeming bitterness. i don’t know what they were going for, but this certainly can’t be it. one of the worst beers i’ve ever had.

Bottle in hotel room, picked up at a Hy-Vee in Lincoln, NE. Clear, dark gold appearance with an off white head. Sweet creamy, grainy, light citrus, hay aroma. Easy drinking, sweet grassy, lightly herbal, straw flavor. Easy drinking and pretty nice.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a lingering ring of ivory foam. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, light carmel and light citrus. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of biscuit, earthiness, light grapefruit and light pine with a crisp moderatrly bitter finish.

Clear light amber pour with moderate foamy off-white head. Nose is light citrus and some bready malt with light caramel. Biscuit and caramel flavor with some faint citrus. Lightly bitter finish. Quite nice overall.

Bottle - Pours clear yellow with a touch of amber and a thin foamy off-white head. "The hopping of a pale ale", huh? So I should get lots of hops on the nose? Yeah, those kind of aren’t there. Metal? Check. Light crackery malt? Check. Touch of sugary sweetness? Check. And okay--a bit of herbal hopping? Check. Tastes about the same, but with a grassy hoppiness that builds through the finish, but feels separate to the rest of the beer. There’s mineral dryness in there as well that isn’t all that appealing. I’d like the beer in the description, because it doesn’t taste all that much like the one in my glass.

arminjewell (9720) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - FEB 24, 2012
Pour on tap at Winterfest 2012, hazy orange with white head, aroma has notes of nice pine and citrusy hops, touch of biscuit as well, but otherwise a bit indescript. Taste is a nice mix of biscuit, toffee, some nice citrus notes, finishing fairly dry and bitter. Pretty nice.

ccex (1370) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 27, 2011
12 oz bottle from a Schell’s sampler 12-pack. Label (from late 2011) does not mention anniversary. Pours a clear amber with a fluffy white head and moderate lacing. Nose has some ctirusy hops. A good balance of bready malts and hops. Fairly bitter taste with a hint of pine but nothing nasty afterwards. Nothing outrageous, but refreshing and well crafted. Not one of my favorite styles, but worth a try or three.

pours an amber color with a good off white fluffy head. aroma is toasted malt and a nice piney light citrusy hop aroma. flavor has the same elements but a bit stronger. this is a vienna?! kind of a blend of an apa, vienna, and bitter. i like it though a nice anniversary beer for them.

(bottle 8/1/10). Clear light amber color. Small off white head. Light toast/malt aroma. Mod toast/malt flavor with light bitterness. Avg duration. Light bitter finish. Moderate carbonation. Fair lacing.
