Loose bottle at HyVee. Interesting light brown color, kicks up a big foamy head, but maybe my glass had some dust in it. Smell is low on malts, with just a hint of spice, and the hops seem subdued so far. Tasting, though, really offers a hit on my tongue. First I think it’s from having a lot of rye, but it seems most of this is from the hop. Bitterness is more from pungency, or like holding a wet hop cone in one’s teeth. Acidic, and maybe not ideal for most beer drinkers. But for hop lovers who want to try a different hop, this is an eye-opener. Malt leaves a lot of stickiness on my lips. Hop at finish offers a sprig of mint.
Copper with a light patina color. Taller, aged paper colored head with nice lace. Big fresh hops aromas, pure Spire B scents. Underneath lies some spicy rye hints. Initial sweet and spice hit the palate. Hints of licorice and pine. Slick light oily feel. Finishes with the rye bread and hit of herbal hops. This is one of those brews that makes me think. I like the components, but there are times I think they work and others I’m not so sure. I could definitely sit by a fire and have a few of these and try to sort out my thoughts. 8/12

Amber lager with a sheet of creamy foam atop a brilliantly clarified beer. Smells primarily of malt, then some corn and flour tortilla and a touch of fruity hops. Flavor is all malt, some grass, some hay, some tea. The flavor profile seems really german in the hop character, with a hint of spice and raw grassiness. Medium on full for the style with a moderate carb and a wet finish. Nice beer, I am seriously on the fence for this one. On the one hand I feel like: "well, I would drink this." on the other I say, "I can’t quite get my finger on this, so I’m uncertain of my feelings on this..."
